Has anyone received an HGC letter yet?!

All I can say to the parents who received rejection letters today is to keep your spirits high, and your child's spirit even higher. They are only 8 and 9 year olds and the world is their oyster at this point. This one decision from a county that keeps their decision parameters vague should not determine your child's long road ahead.

Absolutely true

Home school has a lot of kids under a lot of parental pressure to get in, complete with test prep.

A lot of perspective and calm is called for here.

Are kids really doing test prep for 3rd grade HGC test?!?

Yes. That is how insane this is.

This is a system that is fake...of course parents prep! And prep a lot (yet parents will deny). What is the point?

...reading this thread...I am so happy my kid did not make it...most of you are psychos...really. What a failure of a system. I would suggest MoCo to get rid of this and stop feeding insane parents.

My main concern is that the other elementary schools are not offering adequate instruction to gifted kids. Administrators pay a lot of lip service to all they do, but really it involves differentiation, which is not in depth enough to add much value, and some stand alone math instruction. More formal programs need to be developed

I am sure there are always a few crazies anywhere you go but I don't think your response sounds normal either. There are NORMAL parents with high achieving kids.

Is he Asian?

No, he is not Asian (uncertain why that would even be relevant?). We are fine with the outcome, but would have liked to have some context as to why he was wait listed. Helpful to know so we can offer enrichment in lieu of this. Hopefully, Farmland ES is diligent in offering enrichment programming in 4th and 5th grade, and that they don't just go through the motions. Does anybody have insight regarding this?

It seems everyone is reporting one test score. Last year, we were given three -- math, verbal, and some kind of logic score I believe. Anyone know why there is only one score being reported this year?

Reading this board it seems like every parent thinks that their kid is highly gifted and the next Einstein, and is hence being rewarded or punished depending on whether they got into an HGC or not. Since that is statistically impossible, are people confusing smart kids with gifted kids? Maybe there should be an objective way to temper parents' expectations: Unless your kid got 99s or 98s in the 2nd grade Inview tests and ES scores across the board in the 3rd grade, maybe you do not have gifted kids???? And yes, I understand that 2nd/3rd grade scores are in no way indicative of future success, but maybe this will help address the immediate madness.

And yes, I agree that smart kids should get enriched education, even if they do not get into an HGC. No idea if MCPS can do this or if one needs to explore the private school option for this.

Is he very mathematically advanced but reading is not? Reading weight heavy in this year's evaluation. Take a look at his reading level, is it a full year advanced? Is his Map-r over 97%? This is just my guess, we are on the same boat.

They are 8 for god sake. High achievers? Kids do not care. Is all the parents.
This educational system is broken and generating more and more fake geniuses.

We were at an HGC Open House last night. They reiterated what the letter said that the CogAT/SAS score was one factor that went into the admissions. InView scores, Map-R, 3rd Grade 1st marking period scores, teacher recommendations and peer group at school were some of the other factors. Unfortunately since the SAS score is the only numeric result that was sent out, people are comparing that. That probably explains why kids with 140+ scores in one metric did not get in.

Agreed 100%
True gifted kids will NOT fill so many centers. But MoCo parents NEED to think they have popped out geniuses.

No one said they are geniuses. I think some parents want access to an enriched curriculum because they are indeed higher academic achievers. If a kid is reading 3 grade level ahead, let them be enriched wherever they are, be it at the home school or elsewhere.

Because MCPS made a big deal about the racial makeup of the magnet program is not comparable to the county population. They are trying to downgrade the importance of test scores so that they have more flexibility to make up the GT programs.

It is good to know that your child is not excluded purely because Asians were over-represented.
