The Menendez Brothers

Good Lord, Kim Kardashian has now gotten involved. This story was on NBC News last night. One perspective that this NBC report suggested was that IF this case was tried today, there probably would have been a different outcome. Our attitude about sexual abuse is now more favorable toward the victim.

I can see Casey Anthony or Amanda Knox next.

Occum’s razor — they were pushed to the edge by abuse? Or so spoiled they shot their parents multiple times at close range with a shotgun? I’m not saying they aren’t sociopaths; I’m saying even if they are it is highly unlikely they’d kill because they are spoiled.

They didn’t seem particularly remorseful. Spending money and having a good old time on their ill gotten gains.

What does that have to do with anything? They should feel remorse for having killed the people who made their life hell?

And they spent a bunch of money? So what, everyone in Beverly Hills spends a bunch of money.

It’s not ok to kill people and spend their money. Even Gypsy Rose Blanchard got 10 years and she didn’t even murder her mom herself. Not sure what kind of lenience people think the Menendez brothers would get for their crime. You can’t just kill people who did you wrong.

It depends on the wrong. If I found out somebody was sexually abusing my young children, yeah i would kill him or her to ensure that person doesn’t live long enough to sexually abuse another child, maybe yours. Women sexually abuse children as well.

Which law says it’s ok to blow your parents’ heads off because they did you wrong?

This is what’s wrong with internet discourse. People put words in other people’s mouths and then argue against those fake statements.

Hey dummy, no one said this is okay.

Then who cares what revenge you would exact in a hypothetical situation? Murder is wrong here and you will be punished accordingly. There is no “depends on the wrong.”

(NP) right murder is wrong but motive and reasoning is different
Murder your wife so you can be with your AuPair is quite different than murder your parents because they sexually and emotionally abused you for years

But they said it was self defense, not revenge. It’s hard to argue it was self defense as they watched TV and ate ice cream.

I’m a criminal defense lawyer and I believe the case would have been presented much differently today. In the 80s, as others have pointed out, nobody talked about or really accepted that boys could be sexually abused this way. So, the defense lawyers rightfully felt (I am guessing, obviously) that self defense due to a fear of being killer was a more powerful narrative than self defense because they snapped and couldn’t psychologically withstand the abuse anymore. Even if there was no imminent fear of being killed, they knew their father was not going to stop the physical, sexual and psychological abuse. It was self defense regardless.

No, it was murder.

They tried, but they couldn’t convince jurors in either of their two trials that it was self defense. Doesn’t seem like they ever told anyone they were scared. Not the therapist, not family, friends, etc. If they get a retrial they need a much better defense strategy.

Netflix is on a roll with its Trauma Porn documentary series - dahmer, baby reindeer, schitzophrenic brothers, Monsters Menendez bros.

Not sure how they’ll prove the date of or who wrote the “new” note that turned up. Similar to how the will “disappeared.”

Movie series was great at showing the 1980s and 1990s abuse, misogyny, racism, cop beats, etc.

They are.

I have been watching the NF series. It is really sick and evil if what they claim really did happen. I get why they shot their parents. They were traumatized.

I will add that I was sexually abused and never told anyone. It damages you forever. They deserve a pretrial

I’m so sorry for what happened to you.
I just finished the series and agree that they deserve a retrial. If the abuse happened, the parents for what they deserved.
I think people who have never been abused have a difficult time understanding why victims don’t come forward. But keeping the secret doesn’t mean it didn’t happen.

A lot of people who were sexually abused as a child take that secret to their grave.

When this first happened, I thought the one with the good hair was hot.

They ended their young hot lives by this revenge killing.

Anonymous wrote:There was a case a few years back in Texas where a father came upon a man raping his little girl in a barn at some kind of function on the family’s ranch. I cannot recall the relationship of the rapist to the family, but in any case the father killed him on the spot. No charges were brought by the local county attorney, because he probably wanted to get re-elected for another term.

Most of us would understand the compulsion to snuff somebody we happened upon raping our child.

Surely we must all have some capacity to conceive the mind of a child raped for decades, a child living in terror of his parents - a young man who is still basically a child because his emotional development has been stunted by the trauma of being anally raped by his father on a regular basis and knowing mommy knows and doesn’t care - who is being told by those parents that he cannot go to school and live on campus, he has to keep living at home with mommy and daddy.

How was it not self defense for Erik to kill his rapist and the rapist’s enabler? How was it not defense of others for Lyle to kill them alongside his raped little brother?

C’mon people. This is not rocket science. These guys have served enough time for the snuffing out of two loathesome human beings.

I am watching the Netflix documentary and haven’t watched the other shows. I was a child when this was in the news. I learned to stay quiet and that conviction was one of the things that taught me that.

They have served their debt to society and are not a danger to the public. They should be freed.

I keep wondering if Jose Mendendez was sexually abused by priests as a child in Cuba. We’ll never know, but the abuse of boys in the Catholic Church is a sadly longstanding tradition. That’s the whole way it works.

I was in middle school when this happened so didn't really know much about the case other than they killed their parents.

After watching the show I think if the abuse claims are indeed true they should be freed. After 35 years in jail they've paid their debt.

It was his own mother.
