+1 For a variety of reasons that are not even factors here in D.C.

| At least we already have an academy for AA males here, so maybe he won't feel the need to start another (as he did in Oakland). |
For the cost of that acadrmy, I am sure hundreds of kids could have got vouchers to attend existing and well-functioning private schools, instead of experimenting with their lives for the glory of some ideologue bureaucrat. |
How much did this academy cost? And, what is the projected enrollment? |
Lots about the new high school in article from when it opened in Aug 2016 https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/education/the-countrys-newest-all-boys-public-high-school-opens-its-doors/2016/08/22/a09a78e6-688d-11e6-99bf-f0cf3a6449a6_story.html |
At $30,000, for one year the city would pay to send 1,933 boys to an all -boy private middle and high schools in the DMV. The cost for that one-year is 57,998 million dollars, the cost to renovate the new school. That is a terrible investment. The city invested in a long term venture, not a short term fix |
| 1933 boys go to the school? |
Oh, and they would have to compete and get accepted into these existing and well functions schools. That is unlikely to happen, as the targeted population is not the population that The Landon's and St Anslem's target and admit. |
Why would those privates that are functioning very well thank you want to enroll a huge number of black and Latino students who are need a lot of academic support? Sigh, this school is a great idea if it is successful that remains to be seen as most things DCPS touches turns to dust. By the time those at the top get hold of anything, they change anything that has been proven to work and try to turn it into DCPS/REMORM MPACT LEAP model and it fails. |
Most white folks will never understand that it's not just about sending our boys of color to an all-boys private school in the DMV. |
How do you know what St. Anselm's admits? A few years ago, a graduating Marie Reed student blew away the entrance test to St. Anselm's. He chose not to attend. |
The voucher movement in Detroit, which is in the Secretary of Education's home state, is horrendous. In most cases, you find storefront operations vying for dollars that would barely pay the cost of books in the more exclusive privates. Vouchers are just another smoke screen offering to poor, highly-motivated parents who want the best for their children. |
Not even a comparison. Go to some shitty school that will take the voucher or go to a school that focuses on giving boys of color what they need to succeed. My sons went to single sex schools and I really believe in them. |
Both of those schools educate a certain population of boys. Not all kids want that. My son balked at St. Anselm's. He didn't like the environment. I balked at Landon b/c I thought it was a bunch of entitled boys. One size does not fit all. Just b/c it's private doesn't mean it's great for your particular kid. |
Oooh. You know one kid who was admitted into SA and now you're an authority Do you know what the heck you're talking about. I'll answer. Heck NO. Do you know what the target audience and outreach for the academy is? Obviously not. Otherwise you would have kept your insipid comment to yourself.
