Carrier (was on PBS)

Journey to the Sun (Air and Space Museum) Literally changed my perspective on life, my understanding of time/space... it blew my mind.

The COSMOS series (most recent series from 2014).

Agree with Searching for Sugarman, 20 Feet from Staredom, Muscle Shoals, and Hoop Dreams.

Also b-ball (girls): "The Heart of the Game"

Also for those who also like wine:

"Somm"
The David Kinnard wine trilogy: "A Year in Champagne" etc.

And though a movie, it is based on the Battle of Paris: "Bottle Shock"

A lot of "Hoop Dreams" mentions, but none of "Stevie." Steve James has said he was inspired to make Stevie because of how many people asked him for follow-ups about the boys from Hoop Dreams. He was Big Brother to a throwaway kid named Stevie when he was in college, so he went back to find him and tell his story, because nobody would ever ask about him. Pretty interesting.

A lot of good Frontlines come to mind, but I found "The Dancing Boys of Afghanistan" to be particularly fascinating (about bacha bazi).

I personally loved Blackfish.

Since I live five min. from Sea World in CA, it really was important that I watch it.

I had to watch it with an open mind and I did.

Just watched Dear Zachary based on these recommendations...omg

Tell Me and I Will Forget, about first responders in South Africa. I don't have the link, but you can google and watch it for free on the production company website.

Hugs to you. Need to talk? Therapy? Tissues? Bubble bath and a nap?

My husband thought I was exaggerating until he watched it. It left him a blubbering mess. To the point where about three days later her teared up and said "Dammit I keep thinking about Zachary"

I've seen so much about how Blackfish is everything from misleading to outright lying and not just from people with an interest in Sea World. I would take it with a grain of salt.

Paris is Burning - New York City drag ball culture; what Madonna ripped off to make Vogue

Hands on a Hard Body - A varied group of Texans stand around a brand new truck for days, trying to keep one hand on it at all times in order to win it.

It Might Get Loud - Jimmy Page, the Edge, and Jack White discuss the electric guitar and their musical influences.

+1 Vice frequently brings me to tears. The prison one was very sad but well done. I also found the North Korea episode fascinating.

Same here. Sometimes it's very difficult to watch but I like that it's hard hitting and they show the reality.

The North Korea ones almost come off as comedy if you don't remember that there are millions of people starving to death in labor camps. It's so incredibly surreal and fake- just absurd. Like it's hard to imagine that world exists in real life.

I love the HBO vice series- I just can't understand how the content on Vice online that comes up on my facebook feed is such total trash compared to what they are doing with that series- its shocking they are even the same publication.

I know. Vice started out as very distinctly New York, kind of anarchistic, deliberate trash mag headed by idiot Gavin McInnes. For years they worked with Terry Richardson and posted columns like "Amphetamine Logic" by trainwreck Cat Marnell. That was how I was familiar with them so you can imagine my shock with the Vice documentary series came out.

If you can believe it, they actually have substantially improved the quality of their online "reporting" since the series started. They fired Gavin, and it's been going uphill (so you can imagine how bad it was before). We can only hope it continues in that direction.
