Yes, that was awful.

Why? Did he say that parents had an obligation to send their kids to diverse schools, even in a world where most schools were not diverse? Or was it a descriptive book, or one about public policy?

It sounds from the blurb like he did NOT say that parents had an obligation to send their kids to diverse schools. Ergo, I do not see why it is awful that he moved to Bethesda.

people should live wherever the hell they want. he has no obligation

but as a community oriented blog that makes a big deal of promoting neighborhoods he totally dumped on his neighborhood schools, whether that was the intention or not.

First of all the comment above yours was about Pirelli, not about DS. You are getting confused.

Secondly, DS runs a blog that talks about neighborhoods across DC, from Anacostia to Upper NW.

Thirdly he did not dump on Bruce Monroe, he chose to send his CHILDREN to a school where he (and his wife, who for some reason people are ignoring - perhaps she did not like Bruce Monroe?) thought they would do well. No one is obligated to use their children to communicate something. No one.

if one moves FOR schools, it's obvious that one prefers the new school options to the ones left behind. No one's obligated to justify it, but when you publicly state that you're moving for schools than it's more than implied. And let's be honest -- this is a TWO year old not even old enough for PS and we're not talking about Deal for what, like another 9 or 10 years?

No one has to justify the move. There are a many reasons beyond schools to live in Upper NW and not all of the school options are slam dunk either. I can think of plenty of EOTP school on par or better than Hearst albeit without the Deal feeder.

What Jeff has here may be more full of a-hole comments, but it's a lot more real & informed.

There is plenty of solid info there, and also plenty of debate in the comments. Just fewer trolls.

Any discussion of how some parents leave "because of the demographics" was deleted. That's not trolling - it's an ugly truth that he's choosing to wash from his board. His choice, but I don't have any respect for that.

^^ That is the truth. Unbelievable. I had heard he deletes/moderates comments that don't agree with him, but this is the first time i witnessed it firsthand. I saw many comments deleted that were not rude at all, just honest. I actually unsubscribed from his blog and unfollowed all his social media accounts after this morning. I have no respect for his brand of censorship. Makes me regret having read and supported his blog for the last however many years. He's such a disappointment.

As I said before, good riddance.

I know it's a meaningless gesture that's not going to affect him or his blog at all, but I've done the same. It just feels kind of fake / lame.

I do not see why you would be sure. As he stated, he has been there 12 years, and it is certainly safer now than it was 12 years ago. And the schools issue is quite enough for a move to make sense - Occam's Razor suggests no need to speculate on other motivation.

People move due to crime when they have kids, not when they're single 20 somethings. He has a 2 year old and baby on the way - I think it's highly likely that consideration of safety was equally as important as school choice.

Project much? That's the opposite of what he said in his post.

that's the MO for PoP. respectfully disagree and he'll delete it and quarantine every future comment from your IP pending his approval. So pathetic

Because DCUM is so improve by all the racial vitriol back and forth (which discussions of "demographics" often lead to ? Look if you like that sort of thing, read this and not PopVille. But don't act like you are doing something for freedom of expression.

No has to justify it, yet you are questioning his justification. Hmmmm.

Plenty of single people move because of crime, and plenty of parents live in neighborhoods that some people consider unsafe (obviously including Petworth) Given those facts, and the fact that DS explicitly said it was not about safety, I will give him the benefit of the doubt that he was telling the truth.

In retrospect, PoPville was the the perfect, milquetoast, forum for gentrifiers and their friends. Pets, vegetables & gardens, hip new restaurants, bicycles and finally crime warnings. Now, he's even better positioned to advise Upper Caucasia where they should tepidly venture out to, elsewhere in the city. Not much will have changed, really.

Not a brave toughguy forum like this, where you can learn about why every road in Upper NW should be widened for the benefit of Marylanders, why Trinidad is a place no one cared about their kids would live, and why real estate in Pimmit Hills is so hot. Tough guys read about Pimmit Hills and the best SUVs to buy, milquetoasts read about biking and the best deals on houses in, well, Trinidad.

I agree. He doesn't want to dump on Petworth as being unsafe, at least not by explicitly stating so. But he has no problem dumping on Bruce Monroe, a school which he's never had a child enrolled and he likely knows little to nothing about the school as a parent of an enrolled student. That rubs me the wrong way. He could have left the school question open the same way he did on neighborhood safety.

Lots of resentment here over one family's decision to move.

Jeff, this might serve as a warning to you that you can never leave Crestwood, lest you be branded a traitor.

no resentment or care here. just think it's curious that a neighborhood blogger who's built his reputation on urban community issues would do such a lousy thing to a Petworth neighborhood school. I don't live in Petworth or N. Cleveland Park and don't really care who chooses to live or not live in either of these places.

Or, he could rent his house, invest in a Petworth home & have his kids go to DCI...and no one would say anything one way or the other.
