Yes, absolutely for age 3. I have never once met a person in my Murch boundary neighborhood who has cast about the city for a free spot in a DCPS for pk3.

For age four, I have met two household IB for Murch who sent their kids -- interestingly, both families had twins -- to Hearst for pk4. One of these families did this about 8 years ago, the other, more recently.

It's not a common thing in these parts, at all.

Fight by anecdote! I know several Upper NW families that used public schools for PK3, and many who sent their kids to other schools for PK4 because they couldn't get into their IB school. So by my limited experience it must be a very common thing!

"upper NW" isn't the same as Ward 3.

How many families do you know who own homes in 20015 or 20016 and send their kids across the city for pk3? Be honest.

We do....20016 code.

No you don't. No way.

New poster. Also own a house in 20016, have high HHI, and drive my kid across the park for a non-language-immersion PK3.

Your HHI can't be that "high" if you really make that schlep for free Powell, passing by St. Columba's on the way.

Is it really so inconceivable to you that someone would make this choice? I find that sad.

And what about all the families who leave their IB elementary after 2nd or 3rd grade because it isn't good enough after that... Should they also be excluded from ever attending at all?

I think most people who leave at 2nd and 3rd often enter the equation with an open mind...Hoping the school will meet their student's needs and/or your expectations. When it fails, you throw in the towel but at least you had an open mind. It is entirely different when you show up for a year or two intending to return to your IB. That makes you a disrupter.

^^ thankfully folks who live in DC are not subjected to your 'open mind' test for admission to public schools.
And you are out of touch if you think it's less disruptive to leave in 2nd/3rd. Like it or leave it that is where schools get their testing data from. You know- THE metric you all use to decide if a school is failing.
The problem is not some PS3 carpetbaggers that may or may not exist. The problem is an openly corrupt school district that bleeds money and resources at the top levels.

Disrupter...so stupid.

OP, could you have found a more dramatic title for your little personal pet-peeve vendetta rant?

Everyone goes to St Columba's or Communikids or one of the Jewish preschools or a downtown daycare or any number of other private (pay) schools.

I do know one family (out of 100) that did the PS3 year at Appletree and then (inbounds) Janney PK.
I honestly don't think OP's post is a widespread "problem" at all.

jeez, THANK you. I am a PP who called bullshit on the alleged problem of children living "JKLM" -- which I'll remind everyone is AU Park, Chevy Chase DC, Wesley Hts, Cleveland Park, Palisades, Forest Hills and Friendship Heights -- running all over the city and snatching up spots in ps3.

This isn't happening.

Excellent. Since it doesn't happen, Ward 3 families will not mind at all to having no OOB feeder rights at PK3 and PK4. Everyone is agreed then...

Many won't, a few will. Believe it or not, there are families WOTP who live in smaller houses for which they paid less than many EOTP, and it was still a stretch for them. They did it because they can't afford private and were too risk-averse to commit to a lottery system for school all the way through HS. But they will want to play the lottery for PreK. Fortunately, they have just as much right to do so as any gentrifier EOTP.

Maybe DCPS should just do away with the whole OOB lottery. That would do away with OP's problem and there would be no disruption to the schools. Everyone would be at their IB school.

Sure for Ward 3 this would be fine. And the could raise the drawbridges over Rock Creek Park, too. That would make them happy I'm sure. Limousine liberals.

You can't have it both ways. Everyone who pays DC taxes can play the lottery regardless of their zip code.

Let's get radical here. How about everyone who pays DC taxes has equal access to all DC schools. Crickets from Ward 3...

Clearly this thread has shown that it's EOTP gentrifiers who want to raise the drawbridges. You can't get any more hypocritical.

Sure, that's the way to go if you want all schools to be equally bad.

I think OP is making a fair point. As well as the PP who mentioned families that bail after 2nd or 3rd grade.

However, I think the overall trend is that more and more families are sticking with DCPS and doing the work to improve the schools.

OP's point might have been fair if she had just asked Ward 3 families who do get into EOTP Pre-K to get involved in the school while they are there. There is nothing fair about just asking them to stay off what isn't really her lawn.
