Would love to know this too. They horrific things that are done to innocent people are what made me stop believing in God.
Not OP, and a bit off topic, but I read a book once that sort of addressed this. The book suggested that souls had the ability to choose the life they would lead before they were born. The souls would know, before being born, that these tragedies would happen and accepted that. (The book didn't go into details that the soul would know specifically what would happen, but maybe just their life would be shorter). The reason why they would choose to be born into that specific life varied, for example, it could be based on how the soul needed to progress and grow (going through the difficult times would open the soul up to experience different things) or it could be tied to how that soul was going to impact the lives of others, even if here for only a short period of time.
Also, the book indicated that souls were tied together as a family throughout time. So your mom, could reincarnate as your son's daughter. The generations blur and you all move forward together with the hopeful stated goal of progression. Not progression towards a specific goal, but simply to be a better being.
I thought this was a very interesting way to view life, how we are connected and what our purpose in life might be, which is to try to be the best person that we can. I haven't determined the extent to which I believe, but I thought it was very interesting.
