Popcorn Problem: how could this have been handled better?

First of all, is she PMS'ing? I am a Female and am 100% serious when asking you this. Sometimes during that time of the month, little things like you mentioned can be HUGE things to us. Not trying to excuse her behavior by any means OP, but offer a meager explanation.

Anyway, it is clearly obvious this issue has NOTHING to do w/the popcorn and EVERYTHING to do w/your relationship. You + the wife have many unresolved issues that apparently you have both swept under the rug and have left dormant for some time. And sadly it has come to this.

Instead of addressing the ant problem, you need to go back and address the real issues in your marriage. If you continue sweeping issues under the rug unresolved, then little things like this will grow into bigger and bigger things. Much bigger than the little ants your wife mentioned.
