DC CAS scores to be released 7/31/14

I'd much rather have my kid at Reed based on these scores--Bancroft went down two categories (to Focus) and is now only 45% proficient/advanced overall. Reed is 60% proficient/advanced overall, and it's a rising school with less diversity and more low-income students. Powell is also rising, with 56% proficient/advanced overall. None of these schools comes anywhere near Oyster, which is 84% proficient and a reward school.

Forgot to mention Cleveland, which is also rising and is 69% proficient/advanced.

Those schools are predominately AA. They spend most of their time testing and not much else. Good scores but not well rounded. They work very hard to earn those scores. The other charters have a mix of populations and the kids come already advanced/proficient. Just like the JKLM schools. If A students get adv scores good. If C students get Adv scores, miraculous. Two sides of coin.

Aren't Stokes, Cap City, etc predominately AA? There has to be a better explanation.

Oh yay - it's time to pit school against school! Go at it people. Be proud.

OR we are just concerned parents who are trying to understand the numbers/scores better. Please calm down--it isn't that serious.

When a school is predominately AA and scores well on standard tests, the DCUM crowd sums it up to teaching to the test. The MD board says the same thing about PG County schools that outscore their "whiter" counterparts in MoCo. BTW, the second part of your statement doesn't make any sense. If the charters are pulling from the same crowd that KIPP is pulling from, why can't they bring to a similar proficiency as a KIPP. How well-rounded do you need to be in elementary school and exactly what are you teaching that is so inefficient and taking away time from learning the basics? Honestly, I want to know.

Agree. I'm all for a progressive approach to education, but if that means the percentage of proficiency is below 85%, that is just not acceptable to me. I like the idea of a lot of these other charters and agree that KIPP or DC Prep might not be a match for my child, but I can't imagine sending him to a school with such low scores, even if I do like the concept of the approach.

Hm, so the only way AA children can learn is to teach them the test. Question for you, PP. Do you or have you had a child in a KIPP or DC Prep? I have friends with kids at both schools, and they would disagree with your uninformed statement. But I understand it is your bias that makes you believe that nonsense.

How did Tubman fall almost 25 points in math and 14 points in reading?

If test scores are so important to the current DCPS administration, Henderson needs to do what's right and resign. It's time for an experienced superintendent!

That's not really a helpful statement without understanding what the test is like. I've had classes where a 50% would earn you an A because it was that difficult.

We're talking about 3rd grade math and reading here. How hard can it be?

At least the scores reinforce our decision to go private by third grade.

Scores (statistics) can always reinforce what you want to hear.

Yeah, especially poor scores like these.
