proficient is usually about 60%, and advanced around 70%
Being proficient in DC CAS may translate into a D, and advanced into a C. Bette to look at the percentage of correct answers

That's a poor excuse. What college is going to care that you are bilingual but functionally illiterate and innumerate?

+1 that excuse is unacceptable

What do you want? Even BASIS has a math proficiency of 81% and reading of 84%, and that's among the highest scoring schools in the city. Yes, we should be pushing for all DC students, whether DCPS or DCPCS, to be proficient. The DC CAS is not a difficult test. But why are you pulling out certain charters, particularly those that are also teaching another language, for an extra heaping of scorn?

Not PP, but I don't think the scorn is directed at the charters so much as their fans on DCUM.

advanced is usually around 80% and proficient 65%... Standards are not very high.

Ah, that makes sense. So if you're not at a JKLM where you have 90%+ proficiency on the DC CAS, you're supposed to hate your school. Gotcha.

8th grade last year was proficient at 73%

That's not really a helpful statement without understanding what the test is like. I've had classes where a 50% would earn you an A because it was that difficult.

Can we discuss the HUGE decline in Composition scores at Stokes (went down by 40 points!) and Washington Latin (went down by 42.7 points)? Cray.

Yes, I noticed that too. How is that much of a decline possible in a year? Did they change that part of the test?

What do they mean by "composition"? How do they test it?

Exactly! I don’t have a personal ax to grind with any particular charters. I'm just wondering aloud why the charters listed above are so popular on these boards, yet their scores don’t seem to have earned them that love. Why don’t I hear more about KIPP, TM and the others on DCUM?

Those schools are predominately AA. They spend most of their time testing and not much else. Good scores but not well rounded. They work very hard to earn those scores. The other charters have a mix of populations and the kids come already advanced/proficient. Just like the JKLM schools. If A students get adv scores good. If C students get Adv scores, miraculous. Two sides of coin.

It is amazing to me how many people say that Bancroft is just behind Oyster and is up and coming. I'd much rather have my kid at Reed based on these scores--Bancroft went down two categories (to Focus) and is now only 45% proficient/advanced overall. Reed is 60% proficient/advanced overall, and it's a rising school with less diversity and more low-income students. Powell is also rising, with 56% proficient/advanced overall. None of these schools comes anywhere near Oyster, which is 84% proficient and a reward school.
