When posters are implying that less blacks and more whites is a good thing, it screams basic DCUM (more white = better) theory. |
Whoa, hi Shepherd Park neighbors! I'm the PP above who mentioned that Shepherd's demographics are changing. I was just responding to a PP who speculated that Shepherd and a few other schools were not popular with the DCUM crowd because they are predominantly AA. I only meant to suggest that it was a "hidden gem"--good test scores and all--that will likely get more popular with DCUMers, partly because its demographics are changing. And, BTW, I'm black. |
Thats how people are reading it. I personally doubt that many of the people in DC who would prefer a 10% white, 90% black school to a 100% black school are really the sort who would prefer an 80% white 20% black school to a 70% white 30% black school. I understand there is history and troubled dynamics behind reacting that way, but its still odd. Basically its saying that integration is not worth anything. Put another way, one problem for race relations in DC is that white folks are too tolerant. In most of the country, a neighborhood, or school that became say 10% white would stay that way because there would be no more whites willing to go to a majority black place. Or it would become all black again. In DC there are so many whites who are delighted to live in a place, or send their kids to a school, that is 10 or 20% black, that before long the place will become majority white with accompanying gentrification, displacement, etc. |
You can also say that those folks are "willing" to go to a 10% white school because they don't have any other options and can't afford private. You don't get credit for being a trailblazer if there are no other options. Especially when you admit that you would prefer for the already enrolled black % to decrease more if possible. |
By the way, bigots, I hoped you noted that the poster you've been castigating as a veiled racist is black. See, not everything is racism. Jesus christ, learn this point. Or not, just continue your conversation as if this point has no relevance. Bigot on, folks, bigot on. |
Sure because everything everyone says is a fact on DCUM. If you can't acknowledge that there is tons of overt and discrete racism on this board, then there is no point in debating. Because on this board white means safe. Wilson and Walls is the go to high school but 99% black Banneker doesn't even get a glance. |
why do you assume it is a "no other options" thing. We love where we live, the school is predominately AA, who cares. We don't want any other option. We are happy with this option. We can afford plenty of other options. We choose to live where we do because we love our diverse neighborhood. I don't want credit for being a trailblazer either. I just don't want people to think I am so-called "taking what I can get". That is offensive. |
Not everyone has used race as a reference just like not every black student is a poor performer. People speak in general terms. Doesn't meant they are talking about you. |

Wilson is 46% black and 17% latino. Anyone who considers Wilson a desirable school is not a bigot. If you think they are, you are not living in the same country I am living in. In Fairfax Wilson would be considered "hood". Or look at the agonizing about TC Williams in Alexandria, or about Wakefield HS in Arlington. And thats in the "liberal" parts of inner NoVa, not say suburban Milwaukee. As for Banneker, I guess a lot of people don't want to be the "only". I hear thats true for many African Americans as well. |
plus 1 |
Actually, your kid would not be the only at Banneker. There are a handful of whites and Asians at the school, but I guess not enough to move the meter. |
FYI: The 2014 DC CAS scores for students and disaggregated data have been sent to the schools. They'll probably be mailed out to families with the next 2 weeks. |
