At DC privates - Why are VA parents considered "inferior"?

THIS JUST IN. SCHOOL IS FOR YOUR CHILDREN. Enough with the puerile DC vs. VA or city vs. suburbs manufactured debate, already!

But here goes:

If you are VA parents at a DC private, upon finding out where you live, this is what I (many, most, some) who live in DC or Bethesda/CC will think:

1) You are a conservative. Maybe not a card carrying Republican, but conservative.

2) You are racist. Maybe not racist with a big R, but particularly when it comes to AA, you will hold stereotypical thoughts in your head and maybe experience discomfort if not disdain as you smile and make polite small talk with said individuals, even though in the back of your head you are thinking not so nice thingss.

3) You are possibly slightly or maybe even greatly anti-Semitic. You are certainly not Jewish. If by chance you are a Jewish private school family, and are living in VA, then you are either confused or are a sell out of sorts.

4) You are uptight. Yes, you might be reasonably entertaining after you've had that second martini or scotch, but otherwise you are just such a stick in the mud.

5) You are materialistic.

Wow. That's one of the most ridiculous posts I've ever read. You do realize that two of your five points are prejudices about Virginians being, well, prejudiced. I grew up in Virginia, am a far left liberal, am neither racist nor antisemitic, and don't believe I'm either uptight or materialistic. I live in NW DC now, not because I had to flee the racists in Virginia, but because I wanted to live closer to work (I changed jobs) and to my husband's family. What's wrong with you people? Are you so narrow that you can't imagine nice, reasonable people living in different places?

As a Virginian for whom that list is an accurate description (other than the anti-Semitism - really, you had to go there?), what I find hilarious is the extent to which it misunderstands the political and social culture in NOVA. Most of your DC private school parents live in Alexandria/Arlington/McLean and, as a general matter, they may as well live in DC when it comes to their worldview. To put it another way, the Virginians you think you are dealing with are actually so scarce on the ground in the near suburbs that it might as well be a secret club. As for me, however, I hope this poster is representative, because as a new DC private parent it will be nice to know that the first impression I am making is the correct one.

That's not true. I have schools directory. It's about 60% DC, 30% MD and 10% strivers

I assume the poster means the DC private school parents who live in VA live in those 3 places. Not that all DC private school parents live in VA. Not too hard to understand. Although if we are into literal readings of posts - it sounds like you've got a directory for every DC private school and have gone through each to do a demographic assessment? How'd you get your hands on all those directories?

I love this thread, I find it super funny.

Why do people treat MD parents who send kids to DC school different than VA, when most of VA suburbs, think Arlington and Alexadria are closer to the schools than CC, Bethesda, Mont Co? I don't get why Md aren't consider carpetbaggers or climbers or whatever the word of the hour is?

And how many people who live in NW are actually from DC? And when that person who lived in NW, say Georgetown, move to CC for more space what happens to their classification? I would much rather cross a bridge then go outside the Beltway, but that is just me!

+1.

I have to assume that most of the responses are facetious. I truly can't believe that people have such blanket prejudices within what's essentially a 10mi radius as to assume that Upper NW-Arlington-Bethesda-McLean-CC-etc are SSSOOOO different.

OP, consider it a weeding-out of sorts. Who wants to deal with people who behave like that?

And MD/DC folk? Ever consider that the guy in the Gap jeans and t-shit might be worth millions?

You realize NoVa usually turns the state blue in an election, right?

This thread is awesome! As a NOVA parent with kids in DC private schools, I never knew how scary I was. Note to self: will need to come up with a plan to use this to my benefit when I'm not social climbing...

You still don't get it.

It's because people who live in VA are choosing to live in a basically conservative state, and are choosing the land of broad lawns and narrow minds over the urban experience of living in DC. It has nothing to do with proximity. It's all about mindset.

We don't care. That is exactly what you VA folks don't seem to ever get through your skulls, it just doesn't matter if the guy in the Gap jeans is a millionaire, he is still wearing Gap jeans! Ugh. It doesn't matter who you are, you still live in Virginia.
