We are in neighborhood in NW DC so no public trash cans? Forgive me if this is a silly question, but thanks in advance.

NO, YOU ASSHOLE.

Why does OP have to be an asshole? At least s/he is courteous enough to inquire. Perhaps OP is an apt renter and isn't aware of the ramifications. Isn't that the reason of the post? An asshole would be someone who disposed of the shit without regard or someone who just calls someone for asking a question.

Someone has been doing this at my house/trash can.

Perhaps they don't realize that the garbage collectors grab the big garbage bag out of my trash bin and the dog poop bag (being so small) falls to the bottom (and is left in the trash bin). Then we roll the bin into our garage and find that the stink is someone's dog poop --- and we don't have a dog.

It's beyond rude to use someone else's trash can for your dog's poop. Put it in your own trash can. It's baffling to me that anyone thinks it is o.k. to do this.

No, sweetheart, it is not "beyond rude" to use your trash can. It's totally ok. If you don't like it, do as a PP suggests and lock them up.

Based on this thread I'm going to start throwing poo in recycling bins.

Ok you sound pretty condescending with your "sweetheart" comment. It's not o.k. to leave poop in my trash can. And No, I can't "lock them up" b/c it only happens when my trash bin is set out for the garbage collector to take the trash (but as I stated, the small poop bags fall to the bottom). Otherwise, my trash bins are "locked up" in my garage. My trash bin on my property is not for general public use.

Do you eat on it? in it? Does it sit in your living room? Do you use it as part of your decor? It's a trash can. I GUARANTEE it you wouldn't notice the poo was in it if you were not looking for it. Tied up bags of poo don't smell. I smell the food I throw out (due to septic we don't use the garbage disposal) more than anything else. (and spare me about the small bags falling to the bottom, I have had two large dogs and over ten years have never had a problem with the bags falling out or whatever it is you are alleging).

It's a trash can. This is trash. I'm not walking into your home to toss my trash.

I find some of your obsessions with your trash cans, your propriety area interest in them, and what goes in it to be more than a little strange. And resulting to "asshole" and name calling is more rude than your accusation.

If your bins are in your garage, this thread has nothing to do with you. Try to keep up.

Yes, if you want to give me one more reason to want to have dogs banned and cause me to seethe every time I see any of my neighbors walk their dog on my street, go ahead and [b]sneak poops in to my trash can.
I liked dogs until I became a homeowner.

I don't know if someone has addressed this (and I simply refuse to read 8 pages of what I'm sure are delightful posts on this topic, but in DC at least, trash men only tage garbage that is bagged up. Tiny little plastic bags don't count. So there's a significant possibility that the little bags of dog poop will NOT be picked up, and will (best case) have to be put into a larger bag by the can's owner, after sittign at the bottom of the can for a few days (gross) or (worst case) split opin in the bottom of the can (beyond gross). Based on that, yes, it's rude.

Stop being a lazy pos and put your dog's crap in your pocket until you get to your own home to put it in your trash.

Putting your trash in someone else's can makes you an asshole. Putting dog shit in someone else's trash can makes you a dipshit asshole.

Wow..I had a dog for years..and I never once even considered putting dog poop in someone else's can. God...most people (yes there are houses in the city too) put out trash and then then bring back to garage. God when our kids where in diapers..I always dumped poop in toiler and then put diaper in bad so my garbage didn't stink.. Please be understanding OP that if you have a dog, you shoud handle the poop yourself and not make it someone else's problem. It's gross.

I love this thread because it allows me to imagine neighborly exchanges like this: "Hey you, keep your poop outta my can! The only poop I want in my can is my own poop!" Keep it up, people!

FWIW, I'm a dog owner who never puts my dog's poop in anyone else's can, since I wouldn't want to unnecessarily risk annoying a neighbor. But I'm also not overly attached to my own can, so I really don't care if some other dog owner tosses a bag of dog poop in my can. It happens from time to time, the poop bag has never leaked, and the garbage man have always taken away the dog poop along with everything else in my can. It's really not as big a deal as some people here seem to suggest.

So although I'd probably agree with them that it's best to keep your poop in your own can, some of the anti-poop people on this thread seem like real jerks. Because of that, I must admit getting a little enjoyment out of the though of someone else's poop in your can.

Carry on. Keep striking blows for wackos everywhere.

Just pointing out that dog owners are usually much more tolerant of poop, slime, and hair than people who choose not to have dogs... because they're put off by poop, slime, and hair. To the point that dog owners don't even notice the things that non-dog owners find so objectionable.

Please remember that just because these things don't bother you, it doesn't mean that they're non-issues for others.

And if bagged diapers smell (and I remember quite well that they do), then bagged dog poop smells, too.

Hi OP, I think you are nice to ask. I have two dogs and, no, I do not put their biz-naz in other folks' trash cans. One is an extremely large dog and she produces poos the size of small children. It just wouldn't be nice to subject someone else to that. I either take it home for our own cans or, if we are on a very long walk, throw it away in a city (public) trash can. It drives me crazy when people put their dog poo in our trash cans because the little bags fall all the way to the bottom and never actually get collected -- putting me (well, DH, let's be honest) in the less than enviable position of having to reach down in there and get the dog poo out. Ugh, I am gagging just thinking about it.

Good luck with the new dog!
