Please post these board minutes that you speak of. I've never seen Stokes Board minutes and I did search for them. Not saying that don't exist, but I can't find them, so I'd love to see them. Please post a link.

I'm not the PP, but I found this on DCUM:

excerpted from this weeks Stokes Banner (Issue XV)

"If approved, the DCI wold open in school year 2014-15 with 200 students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade classes and would eventually grow to its capacity of approximately 1,000 students in the 6th through 12th grades.

"This combined middle-high school would allow students to continue to pursue a rigorous academic program while building on the language and cultural immersion experiences from their primary schools [Stokes, LAMB, Mundo Verde and Yu Ying]...at DCI, students would have the opportunity to...earn the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme Certificate, followed by the globally-recognized prestigious International Baccalaureate Diploma and/or International Baccalaureate Career-Related Certificate.

" '...(Stokes School Founder and Executive Director, Linda Moore)...cautions, however, that the board of trustees has not yet committed to middle school expansion and significant legal and financial challenges' confront the four schools that are exploring the development of DCI."

This may be an ignorant question so bear with me...why do you think Stokes, LAMB, Mundo Verde and YY students should get guaranteed admission into DCI? I understand they would come from schools where foreign language is taught seriously, and in some cases, via immersion, but these languages are (as far as I know) not the ones that DCI will offer - Hebrew and Arabic - correct? I would understand guaranteed admission for a kid who went into Arabic immersion elementary, but why from a Spanish-immersion elementary?

Well-meaning, I think, but yes - ignorant.

YY, LAMB, Stokes, and Mundo Verde would all get guaranteed admission because it is their school. It is an extension of their charter(s). They are putting forward the model, the program, the facility, the funding, the curriculum, the infrastructure to get the IB certification, it's THEIR school. Why would they do it if it weren't for their own students?

It would be nice, probably if other immersion schools came along and committed their resources to the school. Right now, the only one on the horizon is Sela - the Hebrew immersion school. The Arabic immersion school didn't have a good enough application to get a charter. Maybe they'll re-work it and get approved next time.

It will be an amendment to the current charter...the agreement is between the 4 schools. The school guarantees these students placemement. when my child reached 6th grade they will automatically go to DCI becasue we are at one of the schools. Read teh amendment. It answers many questions. Stokes/DCI, YY/DCI, Mundo Verde/DCI and LAMB/DCI.

OK, I see. I didn't know it was THEIR school.

Yes, it is their school. And to the Sela person who keeps posting----NO. The member charters are not including Sela, have no plans to include Sela, and quite frankly, wouldn't even consider talking to a school THAT HASN'T EVEN OPENED YET!!! Also, the only 3 languages being offered at DCI are Mandarin, French and Spanish. Perhaps Sela and the as-yet-to-even-get-a-charter Arabic language school should model after DCI and do the work to open their own middle/high program.

The Sela insertions into every conversation are getting old. It's one thing if it's relevant, but to post "Sela will definitely be in DCI" is ridiculous, both because 1) it's not true, and 2) the school hasn't even opened yet.

It's not hostility, it's "wait for the school to open and see how it goes, but stop stating things like this as fact when it's total conjecture or blatantly untrue".

Indeed. Please stop the BS and hijacking, Sela poster, this thread is not about you.

I'm not affiliated with Sela or D.C. Bilingual, etc.. I work for the PCSB, and I suggest you speak with your respective EDs, instead of bitching anonymously. DCI will likely expand to include other schools/languages in the future. Whether or not it will be at WR is an open question, in could be in a neighboring facility. All of the DCI schools have repeatedly stated publicly and to the Board when asked, that they are open to partnering with additional schools.

Amen! I asked Diane about this at LAMB and she said the same thing. Nobody knows what will happen in the future with DCI and they are open to more schools. Hopefully, that means other schools (Creative Minds, etc) will be able to partner up in the future.
Anonymous
just not sure why Creative Minds or any other non immersion school would join DCI.
Anonymous
There is no reason to think that a non-immersion school would come on board.

Actually I am not a Sela poster. I am parent who is pro-charter, liberal, and Democrat who thanks the powers to be for charter schools since my DC would not have any acceptable choices in DCPS!!! My child attends another excellent charter school which is frequently reviled here on DCUM and I am astounded at the hostility towards charters here. Without charters, all students would be forced to attend a usually lousy DCPS unless the family is made out of mucho bucks.

I could describe myself the exact same way you described yourself, but I also agree with those growing tired of the boostering. You are making a big mistake to lump the "Sela/Yu Ying" anti-boostering together with the general anti-charter (i.e. pro-WTU) folks; they are usually not the same people, and it's evident in what they say. There are some bitter that their kids didn't get into a specific school (like, really bitter), and then there are those who obviously teach or are affilitated with a DCPS and are terrified of charters taking everything away from them, so they argue against charters at every single opportunity (sometimes even making stuff up just to create a chance to diss the charters).

I'm actually a big fan of Yu Ying but I do think some people spend a whole lot of time defending the school to the point of silliness. And some really silly presumptuous things have been posted abotu Sela - hence the weariness. But it is absolutely not general anti-charter hostility in this case - I'm a major cheerleader for charters in DC.
