A friend picked one of the names on your list, it's surprisingly cute on her baby and there aren't a ton of other little girls with her name. She gets lots of compliements on it |
so is Achilles |
| I really don't get all of this fuss about popular names. If you like it, use it. There are some on this board that would equate a popular name with mediocrity or worse ("trailer trash"). Perhaps Sophia or Jack or Noah have some special meaning within a family. My grandmother was named Ava and we plan on using it. Who are we to judge each other? If you want something unique, how about Snootypants or Stickupmyass. |

Yay. My son's name seems to be getting more popular, but was not mentioned a single time on this thread. Win!
I think the long compilation list someone came up (and someone else added Benjamin to) is very accurate. I know many children with those names. |
Great list! I'll add from my mother's circle: Joanne, Donna, Joyce, Mary Lou, Martha, Miriam. |
I don't know. I was thinking of Matilda for my daughter but I've now met three of them! (But I'd spell it the French way, Mathilde.) |
| I know a toddler Lynne and a toddler Valerie. |
| Mom's group of friends: Heidi, Lita, Valerie, Diane, Carol, Elaine, Terry, Susan, Cathy, Janet |
|
Updated compilation list:
GIRLS: Sophie/Sophia Ella/Ellie/Elle Eleanor/Nora Stella Ava Eva Evelyn Mia/Maya/Maia/Malia Isabelle/Isabella Olivia Lily/Lila/Lillian Layla/Lola Grace Claire Caroline Julia Leah Lucy Zoe Maggie Molly Emma/Emily Chloe Charlotte Annabelle/Anna Alexandra/Alexandria Madeline Madison Addison Hannah Harper Quinn Anya Alanna (really?) BOYS: Jack/Jackson Liam/William Aiden (and all that rhyme) Max Alexander Charlie Henry Joe/Joseph/Josiah Benjamin Owen Elijah Sam Jacob Finn Quinn Mason Micah Matthew Lucas Noah Tyler Theo Harrison Gavin Dylan Eric Michael What's amazing to me is how so many of these sound alike, like Ava/Eva and Ella/Stella/Isabella or Addison/Madison. |
Did you really go through 8 pages of posts to compile this? |
Hey! Sounds like that's what you should have been named! How can you call someone snooty for wanting a unique name and then say not to be judgmental? What's it to you if someone wants their kid's name to be different? And why does that equate to being snooty? I believe you should go to the stroller thread and weigh in there. This is a fun thread about original names. |

An ordinary name does not equal an ordinary person.
I have one of the most common girls names of the 70's/80's and there is nothing ordinary about me. In fact,,,,here's a little note to all of you who are so eager to have the 'one and only' name: the anonymity that comes with having a 'common' name is often a very good thing. Try being at a small university (or even a large university!) and doing something a little bit crazy drunk...your name will spread like wild-fire and be instantly unrecognizable. I found an instant (and still do today) commaraderie with all the women that share my name. It def. is a conversation starter. I like my name and still do not care that it was common because it was a beautiful name. The funny thing is--when my mom named me at the time..she swore nobody else had the name . I am at the start of the escalation in popularity.
It's not the end of the world. It's just a name. |
Three. |
I don't think anyone's saying it's the end of the world. As previously stated--to each his own. If you want to use a mega-popular name, go for it. The point is there's a happy medium on the popularity scale between the names Sophia and Etheldred. I don't see anything wrong or snooty about trying to find it. |
Don't forget Nancy! |
