Hmm, something odd with UChicago nowadays.

There's the clue, people hate UChicago because of all the junk mail clogging their mailboxes

I have no clue why this site hates on UChicago so much. People complain that elite colleges disadvantage kids from competitive high schools, but they also trash UChicago for admitting large numbers of private school kids that aren't top of class.

Miserable middle class strivers rage at things they (and their children) can’t get access to and can’t afford. Same reason the private school forum here is full of seething public school parents. Same reason the real estate forum is full of seething proles who live in shacks and townhomes mocking so-called McMansions they can’t afford. See also country club discourse.

They could announce that all students will receive a kitten and a pat on the back and the trolls will still hate.

I suspect that it is one poster sockpuppeting.

Because they are a bonafide T10 college, recognized by other Ivy Colleges as an Ivy+, and have very opaque admissions stats with respect to ED.

U Chicago sent my child invitations to apply every other week. Because of all their junk mail, my child did not apply.

Who are you kidding? You can’t afford UChicago. I wish your kid well at UMBC.

My DC is going to UMBC, what do you have against it?

NP: has the budget deficit been felt in a real way that compromises the quality of the education undergrads get at U Chicago and their quality of life on campus?

This has nothing to do with the middle class. It’s the private school parents that are seething because they couldn’t get access to the Ivy League, Stanford or MIT and had to settle for UChicago (in spite of their endless curating).

Same here for my DC. And as a parent, the inability to get clear admissions data made me question the university’s lack of transparency. Also heard that the university spends a lot on campus safety and that was unsettling as well.

So we don’t hate U Chicago, just can only visit and apply to so many schools.

“Seething”?!! I am a private school parent who went to MIT. My DC is going to UChicago and I am thrilled! (MIT is a bad fit for my kid, who didn’t even consider it).

Definitely jealousy. They envy every nice thing they can't have, either private high schools or top 20. They attack UChicago because UC takes a lot from private schools but not from their local public schools. Losers.

Yeah, they aren’t seething because their kids are going there. They are seething because their kids (or, they are the kids) didn’t get in there either. Most people with kids at the school aren’t on DCUM trying to tear it down.

There's just something about the chicago econ bro vibe of the place that sets people off. Me included, I guess. it's like the b-school took over the admissions department since I graduated and I kind of hate the place now.

Clear data or not, your kid is not getting in. Nice try!

100%! But it makes perfect sense when you read the elitist posts of new UChicago parents on this forum. I’m still trying to wrap my head around previous comment about middle class, public school families being losers…

There was a thread where supposedly someone in admissions revealed all ED0, ED1, ED2 admissions data to the poster of that thread.

That is great but your kid is not getting into MIT from a private school even if he had applied. MIT and Uchicgo are not in the same league despite UChicago's manipulated yield rate.
