Child struggling to decide UVA vs UMich

UVA is in a bad place right now with all the attacks from Trump/Youngkin. And I say that as a UVA grad myself.

Actually, UVA is doing just fine. Everyone is happy with the new President and moving along. I am there. If you want to listen to left wing propaganda, that’s your business but you might want to check in with people who are actually in campus. (Youngkin is gone btw and the DOJ investigations are on hold while the University sorts out the examples of discrimination found injuring and firing, the most serious being the medical school - which, Ryan, stupidly admitted he knew nothing about in his whiny, inappropriate 12 pager. You wouldn’t want your Alma Mater to describe are would you?).

Jefferson Council is back, which means we can call time of death on this thread. It was fun while it lasted. Hope you got what you needed, OP.

If you go to Michigan, you can have a shot at working in Europe (maybe UK) with future residency or citizenship. You can have that option open to you if you attend certain unis.

What does this mean? Is there some program for Michigan grads, or what are you referencing?

Yeah. Weird comment. I can’t speak for Michigan but UVA has an outstanding Global Affairs office and offers many overseas programs and opportunities. My kid participated in a political one after her second year at Oxford. That experience taught her she wanted to return, where she is now. UVA is the number one public producer of Rhodes Scholars, ahead of Michigan. Here’s a list of just the program-centered offerings. If you dig in you can read about the scholarships abroad that UVA students win (The Marshall, etc.) and countries offered. https://educationabroad.virginia.edu/education-abroad-your-major-or-minor#:~:text=Selected%20International%20Opportunities%20*%20UVA%20in%20Argentina:,*%20UVA%20in%20Sweden:%20Global%20Sustainability%20Consulting.

If you really are at UVa this is a sign of how not fine things are. And of course you’re lying that everyone loves the new president when 200+ profs wrote a letter saying just the opposite. The maga board has been ousted now -most at least- and we’ll see if they boot the pres. I live dear old uva and hope it can get back to a good place. But it’s not stable now. A lot of alumni stopped donating over all of this. People were really upset Jim Ryan got forced out. If you think this had no impact and all are happy then you definitely have an agenda or your head is in the sand.

Wholesome tiki torch kind of vibes

1) a decade ago
2) not a single UVA student was involved in the march.
3) the protesters were from out of state. This has been confirmed to me personally by many small business owners who were initially very annoyed that these gangs of out-of-staters met and organized in their shops. One business owner went over to ask them to at least purchase something if they were going to use her facilities. Then she got the drift of what was going on and left them alone.
4)Teresa Sullivan (then UVA president) was as surprised as anyone when it happened (I was there - ironically also in the BB&B but saw no raid on tiki-torches)
5) the participants were all put on trial and sentenced by Charlottesville students and residents. I stayed in the hotel with them.

No it’s not. Alarmist.

Why would I be alarmist about my own Alma mater? It’s not in a good place when a lot of alums and professors do not support the new president who the now deposed maga board rammed through without proper procedures after forcing out a very popular president?

Not this again.

You don’t think it’s relevant? Okaaay. Many of us were deeply concerned about the longer term impact on the university. It’s silly to try to deny all of the maga shenanigans didn’t hurt it. Sadly they did.

Well, the two primary organizers were UVA grads.

+1. No brainer. Go to UVA

Michigan charges OOS folks some crazy high tuition - $70,000 plus? Just because they are Michigan. Gag. And my parents are alumni. Who needs that though?

That’s because the wealthiest part of the state is in Oakland County.

Average tuition cost at UMich is approximately $66,000 OOS over 4 years. Average tuition cost at UVA is approximately $64,000 OOS over 4 years. One school is top 20 and the over one not even top 25. How could UVA charge that much tuition with that ranking? Gag.

Probably Rhodes Scholars too.

UMich is really overrated. It is a massive public and you would not get good career services.

UVA because of weather alone.

Nobel Prize winners don't teach undergraduates. They have zero impact on undergraduate life. PhD candidates will interact with them.

There's a reason the "NL Reserved" parking spots at Berkley are talked about. The only way to see a Nobel winner is to see them getting into or out of their car.

That’s not true. I literally took an undergrad class at Cal taught by a Nobel laureate.
