1) a decade ago
2) not a single UVA student was involved in the march.
3) the protesters were from out of state. This has been confirmed to me personally by many small business owners who were initially very annoyed that these gangs of out-of-staters met and organized in their shops. One business owner went over to ask them to at least purchase something if they were going to use her facilities. Then she got the drift of what was going on and left them alone.
4)Teresa Sullivan (then UVA president) was as surprised as anyone when it happened (I was there - ironically also in the BB&B but saw no raid on tiki-torches)
5) the participants were all put on trial and sentenced by Charlottesville students and residents. I stayed in the hotel with them.
