Child struggling to decide UVA vs UMich

Anonymous
There are some weird arguments on here that show either bias or just lack of awareness. Your kid will be fine at either. No one here can tell you where they should go. If they are seriously debating them, go to Campus Days and Days on the Lawn. If it wasn't clear before, that should do it.

This OP’s kid is not choosing where to attend law school, btw!

My Virginia kid is probably going to end up picking Michigan over UVA, largely because they grew up cheering for the Maize and Blue and dreaming of going to games in the Big House. One parent attended Michigan. I am on a stealth mission to get DC pick UVA. Cost of attendance OOS at Michigan this year is estimated $90,000 and in-state UVA is $41,000. Approximately $196,000 savings. I will report back on the final decision!

Tell them they can use the savings to go to grad school at Michigan.

Almost all good Ph.D. programs provide full funding.

Nope. You are forgetting law, medical, dental and business school, which is where many children on this site are heading towards.

The OP’s kid is interested in political science. She also explicitly stated money is not the issue. Perhaps they’re wealthy enough, or they’ve secured outside funding.

True, but political science majors often do go to law school, and each top law school takes a greater percentage of its undergraduates, ergo, you do increase your chances to go to Michigan Law if you went to Michigan Undergrad, etc., Michigan Law is ranked 8. UVA Law is ranked 4. My class at Harvard Law was 30% Harvard Undergrads (some time ago).

Having visited both campuses, hated Charlottesville and wasn't impressed by the campus either. Ann Arbor was amazing and the campus has some stunning architecture. Cute chunky squirrels too lol.

Does UVA actually give preference to its own students? Or is UVA over-represented among the applicants to UVA Law School?

We just visited Michigan in February and wow, those squirrels were definitely living their best life!

I think if undecided in-state makes a lot more sense: Cheaper, easier logistically, and will still feel different.

I feel like we caught Michigan on a bad day. I felt the complete opposite, did not see why Ann Arbor is thought of so highly.

We thought we'd prefer Michigan as we've been good friends with a number of very enthusiastic grads here in DC but our child much preferred UVA. Liked Charlottesville better, also preferred the smaller size (it's almost exactly half) and the general vibe.

We're OOS for both.

This is why it's good to visit. We thought we'd love Charlottesville b/c we know so many UVA lovers around here, but we left feeling confused. Within 10 minutes of being on campus at UM, the decision was made. The internet and your neighbors can't tell you which is better for you.

I would choose UVA over Michigan. Better weather, cuter and more beautiful, and he will be making friends and employment connections in a part of the country you live in. I also feel UVA is more prestigious but others might disagree

C'ville may be the type of place where you have to live to truly appreciate.

I found it delightful for my time there and we yearn to go back. Maybe for retirement.

I used to live in Ann Arbor and it's the only place I lived that you regularly saw four types of squirrels (the red ones, Fox Squirrels (brown fuzzy stomachs), Grey (what we have here), and black squirrels (which are technically just Grey squirrels with a darker coat gene but I've only seen them in the midwest).
