This is what they do. Every single thing, every single time. They send out a survey and then proceed to do whatever it was they wanted to do in the first place, regardless of community and parental input. Makes me want to throttle them. |
Sorry know I’m bit behind but thought Western was Reid’s public recommendation? Then I recall she sneakily “amended” her rec to include this Skyview name and recommended choosing from both. And now SB has just rubber stamped her bidding and gone with name she probably wanted all along?? |
LOL! I'm not one of them, I was just joking. |
First, they solicited community input. That input indicated that names like Western and Oak View were popular choices. Then Reid came up with 10 possibilities, which included Western, Skyview, and a bunch of individuals with ties to space exploration, and excluded Oak View and other geographic names. A later poll showed that Western was the most popular name among families and Skyview the most popular name among students (although no one knows yet which students will ultimately be in-boundary for the school). Then Reid initially proposed Western, and subsequently proposed either Western or Skyview. Seema Dixit then made the motion at the School Board meeting last night to pick Skyview. Ilryong Moon seconded the motion and passed by a 9-0-1 vote, with McDaniel abstaining and McElveen absent from the meeting. |
| Do you mean Oak Hill? |
Yes. Oak View is an ES in Fairfax. |
Richard and Mildred Loving are HUGE Virginia heroes. Grow TF up. This stupidity angers me. We should have a Barbara Johns High School but a bunch of infantile adults were worried it would be called BJ High, huh huh, blow jobs, huh huh, and now rather than having a high school named after a meritorious and worthy person we have vapid nothing names like “sky view.” |
You don't know any teenagers, do you? |
I taught high school for years and I am the mom of a tween boy. I get teenagers. They’re always going to make up derogatory spins on placenames if they want to. Who cares? You don’t cater to the lowest common denominator. That’s not a reason to forever avoid schools with BJ initials or the name “Richard” in them. WTF. |
A lot of people care. |
| So what will the sports teams be called? Jets, Pilots, Astronuats? |
You are right that some opposed to renaming JEB Stuart after Barbara Rose Johns facetiously claimed that it would get called "BJ High." However, the bigger reason why Stuart wasn't renamed after Johns is that the local activists who wanted to rename Stuart were bitterly divided between renaming the school after Johns and after Justice Thurgood Marshall, who had lived in the Stuart district. There was already a Marshall HS, so obviously there wasn't going to be a second one, but Sandy Evans decided she could placate her allies by getting Stuart renamed "Justice" and saying that name honored Johns, Marshall, and a third individual (Louis G. Mendez, a local WWII hero), whose name had been proffered to break the impasse between those fighting for Johns and Marshall. The more conservative members of the School Board at the time favored Mendez over Justice, but the larger and more liberal bloc on the School Board went for Justice. However, they later renamed three other schools after Black Americans - John Lewis, Katherine Johnson, and Carter Woodson. Conversely, they renamed Mosby Woods "Mosaic," which was a silly name given that there was already a Mosaic District in the county served by another school (Fairhill). |
| No one is gonna call it Skyview. Everyone will just call it Sky High. Maybe their mascot can be the Doobies. |
None of the kids who’ll go to this school will have even been alive when that movie came out. |
Do you think the only meaning of "sky high" is a movie?
Kids started joking about the name "sky high" weeks ago. They think it is hilarious that the school could be (and now is) named something that is related to drugs. FFS, teenagers are not babies. They know the term and reference. |
