This is what equity looks like in Alexandria.

My kid will miss out on instruction because the city literally gives this scum free money.

So what did the kids learn here folks? "We start bs and we get 7th period cancelled on Wednesday and in person classes cancelled Thursday and Friday because the staff can't handle us" WINNING!!!! Such a "terrible" punishment for the students! Two more days off school. This was a stupid, stupid move.

If you spent anytime reading the press release, they had real concerns there would be more violence today and tomorrow if they remained open. This is not a punishment it is a public safety issue.

They had the same concerns that they did back at the end of the school year last year...they were worried about retaliation from gangs based on what happened in Wednesday's fight (seeking revenge, finishing what they started, new beefs, whatever). My kid said it was north side vs west side????

It's the only public HS in the city, duh.

I'm aware. That's why a much higher percentage of people than would be typical in surrounding communities move at some point or send their kids to private school.

The ones who stay twist themselves into pretzels explaining it though. It's pretty fascinating.

I know a family who sends their kid there. They have a beach house too. Why not just pay for private. Priorities.

The private options aren’t great either. The DC privates are a tough commute and SSSAS has its own issues.

SSSAS has a massive drug problem. Massive.

What? My kids go there and this is news to me.

Maybe open your eyes.

Wow what a mess. Cancelling school for two days so kids can go have fights in the streets or at the mall? What a great way to pass the buck. I hope the security guards sue the school. Litigation may be the last hope for accountability for all the students who have lost their school due to these reckless misguided “equity” experiments. If a kid has a violent criminal history they don’t belong in mainstream school period. It infringes on the right gets of every other kid in the school. Why hasn’t the mayor commented on this? Guess he’s done.

U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia: “I have personally handled the prosecution of MS-13 members in Alexandria for over a decade. By burying their heads in the sand and lacking courage to address a problem because they mistakenly deem it to be politically incorrect, various community leaders in Northern Virginia simply refuse to acknowledge the gang problem to the detriment of the same Hispanic community they claim to be defending. No one suffers more at the hands of MS-13 than other individuals of Central American birth or ancestry. MS-13 gang members extort minority owned businesses in their own communities, sexually traffic first generation American juveniles, and brutally assault and even murder Hispanic boys and girls who they believe have disrespected the gang. This case is proof positive of the need for community leaders in Northern Virginia to acknowledge this reality and work to be part of the solution.”

This is from 2020. Looks like still a lot of burying their heads in the sand 4 years later.

Has anyone heard how the injured security guard and staff are doing? So awful.

News at 11. Rich kids drink too much and do drugs. Bad things ensue. Parents enable. Really, start your own thread or just wait for one to pop up that covers this very much discussed topic and join in.

I'm beyond frustrated. My child is now missing an exam that he studied for, and cannot get the results of an election for a club leadership position that he is running for (was supposed to be announced today).
The city really needs to invest resources in expanding Chance for Change and offering more programs like Cornerstone Craftsmen for kids who do not want to be in traditional school, as well as counseling/support resources outside of school to try to help prevent this behavior. Yes, the kids who engaged in it do not belong in a traditional high school, and need to leave that setting, but they are still kids and something has to be done to give them some chance to turn their lives around and be productive members of society.

At this point, arrest the teenagers involved where you can make charges stick and suspend the rest or expel them if there is a track record already. I really don't give a shit about their education or their chance to turn their lives around. Their actions impact thousands of students who are showing up to learn and deserve more and it's not right. Get them the F out.

They're still going to be people who exist in the world with you, and they're not just going to disappear. So even if you don't care about others, you are better off if they are able to be productive members of society in some sense so that you are not supporting them in prison or having negative interactions with them in life.

You are correct at this moment in time, I care more about the majority of kids than these few kids. Why don't you? I don't want any of them to disappear. I want them out of my kids' school and I don't think that's too much to ask. It's delusional to think some program is going to turn it all around for them in later teenage years. These are complex, intractable problems and time to admit this way of (not) dealing with them is a massive failure. Move on and come up with a new social experiment.

It’s long past time for ACPS to create an alternative high school. This model is not manageable or sustainable.

There is an alternative school, it's called juvenile detention, we need to use that option and stop coddling these criminals

If there are students that are that out of hand, they need to be expelled. It's ridiculous to close a school because you are afraid of the students

A solution of an alternative high school that can support more than 11 kids would resolve both of our concerns. That's not "a new social experiment," but rather, basic common sense that other districts are already doing.

Anonymous wrote:I guess my question is, though, is this really unique, or is this just unique in the sense that it is happening at a school where there is also a 35-30 percent population of affluent non-minority students? My BIL teaches at a school in a disadvantaged area in another city, and they do have issues like this regularly, though not as extreme as the stabbing incident in the parking lot - but tons of fights, disrespect to teachers, etc.

Wakefield is down the street and has a fraction of the issues of ACHS

Doesnt sound like you've ever been in a school like this.

Just because you and others find all the loop holes to make sure your kid is okay in this environment doesn't make it right. But glad your kid got into UVA PP. All is well then.

What you are describing is life. It isn't unique to ACHS.

It’s not unique but this is not typical either.

It’s absurd to me that the school is struggling like this in an otherwise nice and expensive suburb. We are sending our child to private school but wish public was a better option , and may consider moving to Fairfax county for our child’s high school years

yeah, because this doesn't happen at WEPO, West Springfield, Lake Braddock, South Lakes...

I have taught at one of those for over 5 years, and only once has there been student on staff violence, and it was a cat B student with severe emotional disturbance issues. I can only think of one physical fight either. The level of violence described in the incident is terrifying to me as a staff member.

Don’t forget one student stabbing another to death a couple of years ago. I used to live very close to where that happened and I find the whole thing very disturbing.

That didn't happen at a school. It happened in a shopping center parking lot.

Keep reaching!

School was closed for 2 weeks because it was gang related. And those gangs departed the school to then fight and kill someone. Do you really think it was not school-related? In the videos one assailant is wearing a Canada Goose jacket. These are organized criminal elements. And because we are obsessed with progressive bona fides we act like social workers will make this all better. Alexandrians get what we vote for - and alas here we are.

"In the videos one assailant is wearing a Canada Goose jacket." what does that mean?
