Video of hallway brawls at Whitman

You see, this is why the W schools are stereotyped as being the best performing high schools in the county and the state, yet still can't fix the problems with fighting and security.

This is happening in every high school and even middle schools in our county. Yet it gets covered up and the same bullies and aggravators are allowed back in because they can’t be expelled. Expel them!

What attention? A Twitter post? Is the media even covering it?

Probably not. Everything about the halfway house gets squashed.

The media might be covering if the victim had been a "real" Whitman kid, but the victim also lives in the shelter, so nothing to see here, I guess.

And then what happens to these expelled kids?

That will be their parent’s problem to solve. Looks like they’ll have to step up and start parenting. Real consequences for crime. Unlike Jwando and Mink, I don’t think these kids who are assaulting other kids need to stay within the public school system.

And when they don't?

Their parents either don't care, are dead, or are terrified of their own children.

Wishing is not a strategy.

If the parents are unable to handle their own children they should be either removed from the home or its a telling sign to some type of mental health concern where the child shouldn't be in the general population

I mean, the group home is where kids go when their parents can't or won't handle them. The answer you are asking for is already here.

The staff doesn't care. They are basically prison guards and glad to make them schools problem for a few hours. No rehab is happening. They go yo school and then wander the neighborhood. Where do you think some of the petty and not so petty crime co.es from? You can't really be that naive?

Is this confirmed?

Also, if MCPS can't kick them out the shelter should. Why would they want the liability and to continue to harm others in the shelter?

To be fair, NCCF has been there since the 1930s and the specific program for homeless and abandoned youth has been there since the 70s. Probably longer than most of the folks on this board complaining about their existence.

This program to bring violent offenders here is relatively new. Shelter for families in need sure, makes sense, and they are embraced.

The group home model for the recently released from jail, not so much. If you new the violent rap sheets on the kids, you would not want to send your kids to school with, on the bus with, or anywhere near them. They are extremely dangerous.

According to the website, that program has been in place since 1973, so again I think folks in Whitman zone went into this with their eyes wide open.

The fundamental fact is that minors, even those who have been court involved, have a legal right to an education. I understand that you don't want that education to happen in Potomac, but it needs to happen somewhere and it may as well be a school where these kids are less likely to run into some of their old partners in crime.

Not in this quantity or level of violence. Do you realize what it takes for a teen to get locked up these days? We aren't talking about small matters or selling pot. We are talking about murder, rape, agg. Assult, use of guns, gang affiliated offenses.

+1

Sadly, no, the facility operates with no transparency or scrutiny.

Isn’t this an argument for remote learning ? It’s not like they learn anyways at least they’ll be safer at home

No, they don’t have the right to continually beat up classmates. They should be in juvenile detention with educators, counselors, and facilities able to handle violent kids. We don’t need to redesign high schools into prisons because a handful of kids act violently out of thousands. That is a huge waste of resources and obviously unfair to thousands of kids.

No, they absolutely would not. They are at the group home because they do this stuff. It's literally a home for violent offenders. It's what they do. They aren't kicking them out for doing what they do. If it's a PO violation, they might get punted back to prison for a while, but no, for the group home, it's businesses as usual.

This needs to be how kids who behave disruptively continue their education without harming their peers or teachers.

My daughter attends Whitman. She has personally witnessed two fights this year alone. These fights are a weekly occurrence. They just aren't publicized. Nothing happens to these kids. This is not the first video I've seen. Many times the videographers are in on it - notified in advance so they can capture it - they are not simply bystanders who take out their phones. The videos may not make it to X or the local news but they are widely circulated amongst the students. This violence is not a new trend. A few years ago a kid brought a skillet to school, stood up in class, took it out of his backpack and smashed another kid over the head. Did you hear about it? Nope. Miller's letter referenced the situation being handled according to the MCPS Code of Conduct. Does this rise to the most serious Level 5? Even if it does, Restorative Justice Practices are the primary intervention which means nothing will happen.
