Anyone heard from Pitt yet?

Congrats on the Pitt admits.

I see a lot of folks from DMV go to Pitt - why?

Seems like JMU, GMU, Towson, GW, AU would be better options?

Is there something about Pitt that makes folks apply to Pitt and pay OOS tuition?

Pittsburgh is a pretty cool college town and campus compared to Harrisonburg, Fairfax, Foggy Bottom and Tenleytown. It’s D1. It’s in a city. It’s ranked higher (maybe not GW). Lots of reasons.

+ 1
Rank much higher than most schools you listed (except GW). HUGE school spirit in a fun city. R1 University. If you toured the school, you’d understand.

why in the world would anyone prefer to go to GMU or Towson (commuter schools) AU and GW (expensive, mediocre private schools) or JMU (third tier public)?

1) It's not local - kids want to "go away to college"

2) Different majors are strong in different places. Pre-med and STEM seem like the draws. Also lots of small humanities major offerings. Been on "public Ivy" lists for a long time. Engineering and CS are good.

3) Re: GW, I think Pitt is cheaper and arguably better. Unless you want a very DC only political/international job. Never liked that Foggy Bottom area.

4) Sports for those who like that. There are newish, top notch facilities.

5) Possibly the prospect of the full ride scholarships/merit.

6) Architecture - the Cathedral of Learning alone is an amazing statement.

7) Was a comfortable place for Jewish kids from MoCo and NY metros (politically left-leaning but not too far, close to an urban Jewish neighborhood for reigious and cultural support). Can't say if this is still as true - just don't know. Hope so.

8) Internationally-known due to being a big R&D university.
