Congrats on the Pitt admits. I see a lot of folks from DMV go to Pitt - why? Seems like JMU, GMU, Towson, GW, AU would be better options? Is there something about Pitt that makes folks apply to Pitt and pay OOS tuition?
1) It's not local - kids want to "go away to college" 2) Different majors are strong in different places. Pre-med and STEM seem like the draws. Also lots of small humanities major offerings. Been on "public Ivy" lists for a long time. Engineering and CS are good. 3) Re: GW, I think Pitt is cheaper and arguably better. Unless you want a very DC only political/international job. Never liked that Foggy Bottom area. 4) Sports for those who like that. There are newish, top notch facilities. 5) Possibly the prospect of the full ride scholarships/merit. 6) Architecture - the Cathedral of Learning alone is an amazing statement. 7) Was a comfortable place for Jewish kids from MoCo and NY metros (politically left-leaning but not too far, close to an urban Jewish neighborhood for reigious and cultural support). Can't say if this is still as true - just don't know. Hope so. 8) Internationally-known due to being a big R&D university.
