Boy's Volleyball tryouts were brutal at TJ this year. There were literally zero boys in active volleyball clubs (a couple had some prior experience) the coaches had to teach kids what a rotation was. Meanwhile other other schools have 3 or 4 club players. |
Your kids go to TJ? |
Most of the places guarantee a 200+ point improvement. |
Regular use of Khan (free) can also lead to large gains. |
Khan is free and takes a lot more effort. Just paying $1500 to Princeton review makes it super easy. |
I think this is the princeton review guarantee. It's at MOST a 150 point improvement. https://www.princetonreview.com/legal/guarantee-better-scores?ceid=hs-honors I think it's a bit of a scam. They give you the test that they use for the baseline the overwhelming majority of the time (these tests are in fact harder than the actual test) and you can never have taken a test prep course before. They also require completing course work and practice tests and I think if you do all the work that they requite to be eligible for the refund, you get similar results from khan academy. If you diligently do khan academy and then do any of these prep courses, I don't think you see much of a difference in test scores. |
You're mostly paying for external motivation because the parent doesn't want to pester the kid. |
Khan really isn't all that great compared to for $$ resources like AoPS, RSM or even Brilliant. |
The real resources that matter are caring and loving parents that take the time and interest in their child’s education to help them achieve these great heights. It starts at a young age and is not something a school can do. |
For the SAT? I am not familiar with AoPS and RSM being good for anything besides math. And math is the easiest part of the SAT. About a third of asian kids get above a 700 in math, 20% get above a 750. |
It also take parents that know how to effectively nurture a child's education. |
I suspect that we will see a larger increase in the number of commended students but also a large increase in the number of students who do not receive any awards. |
The same percentage of kids in Virginia get NMSF every year. Those NMSF awards went to other parts of the state not other parts of the county. Commended is a nationwide cutoff. |
Yes, I also noticed that VA is a lot less competitive for NMSF than nearby states like MD these days. |
Those programs are for the very top students. It's mostly a chicken and the egg thing though. If you can afford them, your kid will do well in math. |
