Master List of 2025 National Merit Semifinalists - APS, FCPS, LCPS, MCPS - note that the cut-off this year for both Maryland and Virginia was the same (222). Schools with STEM or IB magnet programs are italicized. Would be great if it was normalized to student body size. The actual difference between Langley and Lake Braddock should be far more apparent when compared to number of kids.
Maybe it should be normalized to the number of students at each school whose parents are paying for PSAT/SAT prep courses.
If paying for PSAT/SAT prep would guarantee a good score, wouldn't the private schools and McLean/Langley have much higher number each year?
Most of the places guarantee a 200+ point improvement.
I think this is the princeton review guarantee. It's at MOST a 150 point improvement. https://www.princetonreview.com/legal/guarantee-better-scores?ceid=hs-honors I think it's a bit of a scam. They give you the test that they use for the baseline the overwhelming majority of the time (these tests are in fact harder than the actual test) and you can never have taken a test prep course before. They also require completing course work and practice tests and I think if you do all the work that they requite to be eligible for the refund, you get similar results from khan academy. If you diligently do khan academy and then do any of these prep courses, I don't think you see much of a difference in test scores.
