When are NMSF announced?

Anonymous
Any news on this topic? From what I read on Reddit, it seems that schools should have the lists of names and can unofficially inform semi-finalists and commended students this week, and the official announcements will come out next week.

Yep. About half the kids that belong here get in.

Given how grumpy area principals have been for decades about TJ taking all their future NMSF kids in 9th, this should make them happy.

Unless, of course, TJ was actually able to be a differentiator in whether kids got NMSF or not, in which case this is terrible news. Did other area schools do 84 kids better?

That's just kids who are from Alexandria area, you nitwits! FCPS hasn't put out anything yet.

This Patch article claims to list a bunch more Fairfax County schools, public and private:

lol you're the nitwits. That list includes TJ and all its semifinalists because TJ is an Alexandria school. You think that list is only for kids living in Alexandria? lol, not even sure there are 81 Alexandria kids per class at TJ

Is it prestigious to be a semi-finalist, or only if you get to the finals? Can this be listed on CommonApp

Yes it's decently prestigious to be a semi-finalist.

Thank you - Can this be included in Common App, and if so which section

The list is very likely accurate. I think the National Merit people sent out the lists of names to schools and the press last week, and the press is supposed to "embargo" them until today. So unless there's some kind of editing screw-up, these would be copies of the official lists.

Based on Patch information:

TJ 81
Langley 19
McLean 16
Oakton 11
Chantilly 10
Lake Braddock 9
Madison 9
South Lakes 6
Woodson 6
Marshall 5
Fairfax 4
Robinson 4
Centreville 3
Westfield 3
West Springfield 3
Edison 2
Hayfield 1
Herndon 1
West Potomac 1
Annandale 0
Falls Church 0
Justice 0
Lewis 0
Mount Vernon 0
South County 0

The number of TJ NMSF was apparently down by over half from last year (from 165 to 81), and the number of NMSFs from other schools only went up by 16 (from 99 to 115). Good luck to Reid trying to spin this as a success story.
