Double homicide in Silver Spring

Anonymous
I live by Eastern MS and Blair and don’t see any crime whatsoever but I also never frequent DTSS and Wheaton Mall and the last time I was in DTSS, I was surprised to see the amount of homeless people on the streets. It’s more than I ever saw when I worked in PG County and downtown DC

What I don’t get is why lower income residents of Silver Spring have such a higher propensity for violence than lower income residents in Fairfax or Alexandria.

Ok? Nobody is forcing you to do that.

Though it is an odd conclusion to draw from an incident where the shooting and killing was done by the police.

If you read the story, the man was holding a hostage. Who wants to live near unstable, violent criminals?

If you read the story, the man was in the apartment with his mother. Please tell me where in Montgomery County it's possible to avoid living near people who have mental health crises, parents, and access to guns.

HE WAS HOLDING HIS OWN MOTHER HOSTAGE!

Well, that's not what the police news release says, but if that's what he was doing, then yes, that is something that people experiencing mental health crises do. Which parts of Montgomery County don't have people experiencing mental health crises? I live a long way from Silver Spring, nowhere near any apartments, and a family member called the police again for another welfare check on one of my neighbors, just last week.

What is your basis for saying that he was having a mental health crisis?

It’s in the police report.

You can go to the go fund me page by his family and they talk about struggling to help him with his mental health.

Link the report.

And I will also say this, I don’t want to live near people with a higher propensity to be violently mental ill.
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7614874/

Mental illness is not something only the poors have.

Mental health crises are not something only the poors have.

No but people with money and resources like great insurance are more likely to be able to manage it so it doesn't result in violence. Not always. Just more likely.

Yet Potomac and Bethesda kids have murdered their parents and others.

I specifically said lower income are more likely to suffer . That means, for those challenged with reading comprehension, that it still happens in higher resourced neighborhoods and families, just less often.

If you go to Gallery Place in DC, you'll see all the homeless people because the shelters drop them off there during the day. Similarly, in DTSS, the Progress Place shelter is right there and doesn't let them stay during the day.

Not a difficult concept -- if you want to know where the homeless people are, figure out where the shelters are or where those shelters drop people off during the day.

IIRC, the county gave away land to a developer to build that shelter there and the developer spent a paltry $15m on construction and cut a lot of corners leaving the county with a building requiring constant maintenance and repairs, along with a shelter that attracts violence and crime to the community. So it’s another lose-lose outcome which is all too common for Montgomery County.

This is common. On NY Ave by the men’s shelter, you’ll see men lined up all afternoon waiting to get back in. Idk why. It does seem dumb. I guess it’s budget?

Is there a city with no murders?

Silver Spring is not a “city”.

What amount of murder is acceptable to you?

True Takoma park, Gaithersburg and Rockville are.

How many suburbs surrounded by city and have the population of 80K have no murders.

I’d guess two of those

The fact that it happened so early is really scary too - our teens frequent this park and absolutely could have been there. We are also concerned about the seeming uptick in violence in downtown Silver Spring and many businesses moving out because of it. It’s a real shame because pre-pandemic it seemed very safe and thriving.

We moved here because it is more city than suburb - we really really love it and are not considering moving, nor are any of our neighbors that we know. We’re all just really sad and angry that this is happening but do not feel concerned in our daily lives and certainly don’t feel like this is a “war zone.” We’re all going about our lives as usual though yes, we are concerned and really wish something could be done - it is a Silver Spring problem, yes, but also seems like a general city problem as there are similar reports elsewhere. I am not sure where we would pick up and move from our beloved community and friends that doesn’t have these occasional violent and unacceptable issues. I think we all just feel a bit powerless.

This is because the government considers DTSS and the immediate surrounds as an easy target on which to force social agendas, while also considering it unworthy of investment to ensure equitable levels of public services. It's close in, but doesn't have the protection/self-determination of incorporated Takoma Park or Chevy Chase on either side. The concentrated wealth in those communities and in Bethesda tends to support protective political influence that inner SS doesn't get.

This. The powers that be are creating a no go zone. Packing SS with low income projects and up zoning and it’s rapidly becoming the mess we all thought those decisions would bring. Dc is moving away from the old model and we are regressing

I go there all the time. You are absurd stop gas lighting.

I am more concerned in the parking lot of my local Asian grocery store today with the Mormons pushing their religion on customers.

Or my local Giant, when I go in always a bible thumper bothering people.

Ok hold the phone…did you just say you’re more concerned with parking lot proselytizing than murder in a park? Did I read that right?

Pretty clear that’s not what he said, but also pretty clear that you didn’t start this thread in good faith or with any desire to actually discuss anything.

I am not OP. Can you explain what he said because clearly I’m missing it. That’s why I asked.

You are more likely to die by car and have basic human rights taken away by religion than being murdered.

So I wear a seatbelt and don’t let religious zealots take over our govt. I prevent murders by working to ensure everyone can eat and live.

That is the funniest and most absurd thing I’ve ever read on DCUM. Well done.

Are you happy and well fed? Do you run around murdering by day?

I just rode my bike through DTSS and it was wonderful! Nice weather, nobody bothered me at all. I sat in a small park and drank my coffee and read my book. Very pleasant.

It’s being forced upon us by up zoning

You must be having one as well if you don’t have the good sense to figure that out without a source. 🙃

Whatsoever? Really? I’m in Woodmoor and cars are broken into/stolen pretty much on the regular over here.

We need to band together and vote every single politician out of Montgomery County. People are going to lose hundreds of thousands of dollars messing with these idiot politicians. Is that silver spring metro garage monstrosity still under construction? Montgomery county is embarrassingly managed. Vote for all new names. It can’t get worse. Can’t.
