Double homicide in Silver Spring

And I see another report of a shooting in Wheaton. This is all in the span of two days. Is the entire area of Silver Spring basically a no go warzone at this point?

I live there. No it is not a war zone.

As long as you’re comfortable with the level of violence then everything is cool, I guess.

It's scary. I used to live there and would walk through this park, as would my teen, fairly often.

In my experience it's a lot easier to stomach these things when you have very small kids who are always with you. When you start sending them out to be on their own, at 7pm!, and these things happen it's much more frightening especially when they are adult-sized.

Is there a city with no murders?

Of course not, practically speaking.

But as someone who lived in an area where I could sometime hear gunshots and there was adjacent crime it was relatively easy to brush it off because it was mostly fine that it didn't affect me much. Until I moved to an area where these things are just not a part of daily, weekly, or regular life. It's different, and clearly the later is preferable. It's sad that so many people don't have the ability to live in safer places. It's one thing to say it's a trade off, but don't become so immune to the problem that you deny it: that's a fair way to adapt and be resilient, but it's ultimately unfair to the people who are less better off who live closer to the violence (physically and socially) to just turn your head and deny the problem.

Silver Spring is not a “city”.

What amount of murder is acceptable to you?

We used to live in downtown Silver Spring 10+ years ago and moved to Bethesda for many reasons (shorter commute, better public schools), one of which was safety. The last straw was witnessing a mob fight with knives in the pedestrian avenue. I have no issues going there during the day to see friends and go to various appointments. I am careful in parking garages and in the evening.

Fortunately, crime is down this year, although everyone working in the criminal justice system is worried about a typical surge in the warmer months. Before this, we had only had one homicide in the county this year, which is much lower than normal.

However, gun violence is still frequent. Machete violence is still occurring. These incidents just don't make the news as often because we don't have particularly robust local news coverage anymore.

No level of crime is acceptable. But we can't eradicate it all. A good goal would be to keep it under 2013 stats, which have been the lowest in decades. There were 8 homicides that year. There were 34 in 2021 and 29 in 2023. I hope this year is more like 2013.

As someone who also grew up in such an area I can assure you Silver Spring is not a war zone.

NP. You realize that lots of live in Silver Spring right? You're telling someone who lives there what's fair to...the people who live there. The shooting (which happened very close to where I live) is tragic; hopefully, they'll find the people who did it. The jump from there to "war zone" or "no go" or even "gunshots are part of daily life," though, is totally wrong in my actual experience as a person who lives here.

Thanks for reframing the situation. I spent years of my childhood living a capital city where one end of a block can be dicey and the other is safer, and you have to navigate that coming and going to school and activities. Now that I live in a much safer and tonier suburb, I know what the difference is: greater peace of mind. Millions of people live in dicey areas around the world. You become habituated. Most people have no choice and have never experienced anything different. But when you DO have a choice and can move out, you certainly feel better in your daily life.

No. What a weird thing to say.

It’s equally as weird as saying some de minimis level of murder is no big deal and acceptable.

Except no one here said that.
