Dr. Mooney should be replaced by a more experienced Principal who knows their job better. Time for him to go. He's had too many communication issues. There have been too many slip-ups, most of them related to safety, including the fight at the Bethesda metro at the beginning of the year, and the ARMED carjacking perpetrated in part by BCC student(s). |
Not trying to defend anyone here certainly not at the moment, but know they are controlled heavily by CO what they write, when they write it vetted by CO. And per letter, by MCPD too. But a more experienced administrator yes could have handled differently though not sure what that difference would have been not knowing other details. They could address why school did not go into lockdown, shelter in place. Article said alleged person is known and was seen fleeing building. So they caught the student therefore, no lock down? What was it? Those details can be shared without compromising identify. Parents should be livid. Beyond time to join forces, families. |
BCC parent here. I thought Dr. Mooney’s letter was appropriate and that they handled things responsibly. There is no reason to go into lockdown if they know the threat is no longer in the building. My child saw a lot of police offficers this morning, but I’m grateful he didn’t go through the trauma of a lockdown. |
Dr. Felder, this is your moment to say enough is enough. Will you step up to the challenge? |
Did the school know for sure, did your administrator followup with details? If your kid was at school whenever that carjacking took place, heard from neighbors that school sheltered in place, not exactly same as lockdown but your kid did go "through the trauma" nonetheless. |
Really? Elrich should. |
What should this "enough is enough"-saying consist of, in your opinion? |
Why don't we lead her demonstrate her leadership? Are you happy with the way things are? |
Why don't we let her demonstrate her leadership? Are you happy with the way things are? |
Elrich is the superintendent of MCPS? |
Yes, the letter from Dr. Mooney said the student fled the building. The school went into lockdown when the carjacking happened because it was dismissal time and police were chasing the carjacker. The students knew there was something happening outside and that they were being kept inside to keep them safe. So there was no trauma there. The experience of going into lockdown the year because of a suspicion of a gun on campus was quite traumatic for both students and parents. |
I’m the PP. Just to clarify, last year’s lockdown was scary but justified. My point is that students shouldn’t go through that unless there is a threat. |
What does it say about the efficacy of MCPS security that the student was able to flee the building? Also, we know that a student alleged he had a gun but given that the student fled, was it ever confirmed he had one? And did he flee with the weapon on him? Sounds like it, since it doesn't say if the school was able to search him. |
They sure get a whole lot through our taxes. MoCo families have already started fleeing for Howard, Frederick, VA. Those biotech families will school their kids elsewhere while they work in MoCo. So, yes it does involve Elrich if you didn't already know. |
Elrich does not control MCPS. He can influence it indirectly but he can’t tell them what policies to enforce or what line items to fund. I do think he should use his bully pulpit more but it’s wild to jump over Felder, who is directly in charge of MCPS and say Elrich is more responsible than her. |
