BCC student with weapon today

No one said he is more responsible than her. This is the problem here. They need to have a real partnership. Elrich should definitely be thinking about quality of schools as a CE and effect schools have on this county.

No new info but it confirms what was in the principal's letter.

THE PRINCIPAL DID NOT SAY WHAT THE WEAPON WAS. I am outraged that he did not mention it was a gun, and that he's leaving us hanging like this. The BCC listserve is going crazy.

As it should.

Dr. Mooney should be replaced by a more experienced Principal who knows their job better. Time for him to go. He's had too many communication issues. There have been too many slip-ups, most of them related to safety, including the fight at the Bethesda metro at the beginning of the year, and the ARMED carjacking perpetrated in part by BCC student(s).

Not trying to defend anyone here certainly not at the moment, but know they are controlled heavily by CO what they write, when they write it vetted by CO. And per letter, by MCPD too. But a more experienced administrator yes could have handled differently though not sure what that difference would have been not knowing other details. They could address why school did not go into lockdown, shelter in place. Article said alleged person is known and was seen fleeing building. So they caught the student therefore, no lock down? What was it? Those details can be shared without compromising identify. Parents should be livid. Beyond time to join forces, families.

BCC parent here. I thought Dr. Mooney’s letter was appropriate and that they handled things responsibly. There is no reason to go into lockdown if they know the threat is no longer in the building. My child saw a lot of police offficers this morning, but I’m grateful he didn’t go through the trauma of a lockdown.

Did the school know for sure, did your administrator followup with details? If your kid was at school whenever that carjacking took place, heard from neighbors that school sheltered in place, not exactly same as lockdown but your kid did go "through the trauma" nonetheless.

Yes, the letter from Dr. Mooney said the student fled the building. The school went into lockdown when the carjacking happened because it was dismissal time and police were chasing the carjacker. The students knew there was something happening outside and that they were being kept inside to keep them safe. So there was no trauma there. The experience of going into lockdown the year because of a suspicion of a gun on campus was quite traumatic for both students and parents.

What does it say about the efficacy of MCPS security that the student was able to flee the building? Also, we know that a student alleged he had a gun but given that the student fled, was it ever confirmed he had one? And did he flee with the weapon on him? Sounds like it, since it doesn't say if the school was able to search him.

It says we need more security given the size of our HS's, weapon detectors and more.

I cannot excuse Dr. Mooney anymore. I've given him the benefit of the doubt so many times, because he's nice, and he's had health issues. Also he was a special ed teacher, and one of my kids benefited from an IEP.

But enough is enough! This crap letter after a kid enters the school building with a gun? We live in the country with the highest number of school shootings, by far. This is not an acceptable response, just like none of the others were, just in this one school year!!!

Out with Mooney.

Where actually is Felder? Maybe we have not kept up with CO happenings to know. Is she out there in the community, holding meetings, or is there too much mess at CO to try to clean up so she hasn't made time for being visible? Asking honestly. McKnight was already deputy so we had "seen" her before she became Interim and then Super.

Don’t vote the Apple ballot. Vote for the candidates, which you think will represent your views the best. The Apple ballot has an agenda, and they have brought us the current board of education. The apple ballot has endorsed the current BOE who have put us in this current situation.

That pretty much tells me whatever I need to know about candidates. I was not impressed with the options but I really can't handle who we have now!

The Apple Ballot candidates are: Natalie Zimmerman, Laura Stewart, Rita Montoya
The incumbents are: Rebecca Smondrowski, Shebra Evans, Lynne Harris

Are thee any non-woke candidates? That's who I want to vote for.

No new info but it confirms what was in the principal's letter.

For the remainder of the school day, the school had an increased security presence “out of an abundance of caution,” Mooney wrote. That means the number of security guards and staff assigned for monitoring was increased

Where do they find the security guards for "increased security presence"? How come they don't have more security guards everyday?

I had heard LA county investest millions in metal detectors recently and are now removing them because it was ineffective.

Sweet! You’re gonna pay for my kids private HS? Such a generous offer. We need more people like you!

Yep, will take that poster's offer too. No to religious schools!!!

I’ll take religious schools over your train wreck and many others are too.
We all know you would too.

Why again are you on the "train wreck" forum? Go deal with your abuse cases at your private school.

Keep trying in your desperation. I have a say for public as I pay and live in mont county. You can suck it.

Of course can't believe they pay property taxes and also pay for private school. And wait until their private school kid is roommates with a *gasp* public school kid at the same college.

Because we can pay for private school and choose to. You’re jealous about that.
Colleges are for *gasp* all individuals who completed high school.
You simply don’t care enough about your child to send them in their formative years to a good learning environment.

dp.. if all private school parents are like you I'm glad we decided to keep our DC in public.

Yeah, we alllll believe that. If that’s true, you are irresponsible to keep your child in unsafe schools bc you don’t like parents from private. Okay, you, sure.

Privates are safe? Have friends with kids in private. Where are you sleeping while your private school attending kid is at school?

Yes, privates are generally safer than public. Duh! Have you been living in a cave? Why do you think this thread was started? Look at the title.

Thread was to talk about an incident at a school. No one is interested in hearing from a parent who sends kids to private school. There is another forum for such parents.

Anyone in Montgomery county including empty nesters have a say which is why they can vote tomorrow in the board of elections.

dp.. sure, you can vote the way you want to, but if you're a private school parent, why do you care so much about what happens in the public school? I mean.. when a public school parent goes onto the private school forum, they are told to go away, and are asked, "why are you even on here"?

What happens in public schools doesn't affect your kid. You're just on here to gloat and be smug. Not a good look for you private school parent. Yuck.

Don’t care how you think it looks. I think you look bad for sending your kid to public.

I don't like private school parents who are smug aholes, that's true. I don't want my kids exposed to private school kids with ahole parents; rubs off on their kids. My kids would have to be around that all day, 5 days, per week for like 9 months.

Yeah, because lockdowns and guns are a better option for students. This just reinforces how irresponsible of a parent you are.

right, so then colleges should take this into account and give a boost for all public school students, and expect much higher achievement from private school students because they have such a better learning environment. Then, we'll see how smug you are.
