List down your safeties

SAfeties for one kid are reaches for others.

For example, my kid liked both Pitt and Delaware. Both schools are very popular in her circles as safeties. My kid did not get in either - it becomes a numbers game, so many kids from high school and nearby high schools applied my B student kid was squeezed out.

So safeties for my kid became West Virginia, Towson, Westchester, Duquesne. All admits with merit aid offered.

This is exactly right. A safety for Sidwell Friends' valedictorian whose parent is a senator is literally anywhere, for another kid a safety is the local community college. It's just very much relative and a million factors go into it, and it's not offensive to say so. Congrats to your kid for picking a great list of reasonable safeties and breathing easy!

Wisco is not a safety for anyone from out of state.

Well, it was for my kid, and she got in, don't know what to tell you. Naviance for our large NJ public was clear she would with her stats and she didn't sweat it.

DP. It wasn't a safety OOS. She got a little lucky. Naviance doesn't keep up with the current trends that well.

Accepted to both and to 6 more higher ranked/T10s, including ivy where DC committed. Uva and wake both great but are backups/likelies for the top kids at the school

Interesting, are you outside of Nova? College counselor told my "top kid" at a top Nova HS that she would be an excellent candidate for UVA, but it sure was not a safety for her or anyone else.

Some people are just trolling these boards.

It’s very hard to get accepted from MCPS.

My 4.2 kid was accepted from a different county. Was near top of class.

I am not certain but I have the impression that how hard it is to get into UMD from MCPS depends on the school. It seems that about 50% of applicants from each high school get in. At my kid’s DCC school, a much smaller number have top grades than at say a W school. So to me it seems a lot harder from the wealthier schools.

UMD is no longer a safety for 80% of students at MCPS.

Boulder has an 80% acceptance rate and over a 90% ED acceptance rate. Even for OOS, they accept something like 2 out of 3 applicants, and you have to figure the school gets some pretty weak applicants (potheads, ski bums and the like).

Wisco and UMD might be borderline safeties for in-staters, but not for OOS.

I bet boulders acceptance rate this year took a nosedive. It’ll be interesting to see those numbers.

Same for OOS CS major at UMD. They cut the admittance class size by half starting 2024, and this includes transfers.

UVM
Pitt
Juniata
Another SLAC
Elon—no merit aid

We thought Syracuse was a safety but child rejected from one of their top programs, so you never know. Another person I know with a far lower GPA was accepted. Major and college within the university must make a big difference.

We didn’t consider UMD a safety because we know good students who didn’t get accepted.

Absolutely does for a lot of colleges. CS at UMD definitely not a safety.

But they accept 50% in MCPS

Sorry all your kids didn’t get into Wisco but again it really is a safety for some kids who then go to T20s. As is UGA.
