Report of a massive fight at Clarksburg HS

I'm 19 years in so the pension is the only reason I put up with the disrespect and BS. I'd say the majority of students and families are wonderful. However, the few tough apples are extremely tough. I never thought I'd be spit on, hit, kicked, called a *itch, etc. as an elementary school teacher but here we are as a society. Administration has their hands completely tied and central office is woefully out of touch with the circus that's happening in schools daily.

Welcome to the club. A lot of people feel the same but their jobs don't have these amazing benefits.

Im a high school teacher. The disrespect is through the roof. I get called a *itch regularly, usually for offenses like asking students to put a device down or asking for work to be turned in. I’ve been pushed into a wall. I’ve been threatened. I agree that most students are wonderful, but the few aggressive ones take the majority of my mental and emotional strength.

My hands are tied. I also agree that admin’s hands are tied.

I won’t make it to the pension.

Are you mistreated this much at your work, too?

And if we have it good, why haven’t you already switched to teaching? We even make it so easy for career switchers since we are desperate.

“Emotionally disabled”?

Essentially kids who have been removed from their home for extreme abuse.

Not restricted to kids that have been removed from their home for abuse…the majority of kids in a ED program live at home but have extreme behavior issues. It takes a LONG time for MCPS to actually put kids in a ED (Emotional Disorder) program. I teach at an elem school and we have multiple kids who qualify for these accommodations but I have only had one student that was successfully placed out. Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) is being used to justify keeping these kids in their home schools (multiple instances of violent or aggressive incidents, fighting, throwing chairs, tearing apart classrooms to the point of the class needing to evacuate for safety, etc.). Not sure what happens in this particular incident but wanted to clear up the misconception that ED programs are only for students who have suffered abuse and removed from their homes.

But it is essential kids who were severely abused and many taken from their parents.

Sorry but no it’s not. I don’t wanna argue semantics but that is a common misconception. While many kids in the program may have experienced poor parenting (and there are ED kids with parents that are fighting for them to be in an environment with more support), the biggest issue is the refusal by MCPS to quickly and appropriately place kids in these programs. How many violent incidences need to occur before MCPS realizes our schools are increasingly becoming less and less safe for students?

These programs are no longer called ED programs- I believe the county renamed them SESES several years ago. I worked in one as a special education teacher about 8 years ago, so I can’t speak exactly to them now. That said, when I worked in the program, it was rarely my students who created problems within the general education setting because they had supports in place and adult supervision as needed. It was the students not in a program, with or without special needs, who were not supervised the same way that created problems. The problems we had with our students were very contained to our kids and staff only -and not between students. Typically it was one student having a hard time and several staff dealing with it. I can think of no times in my years in the program where one of my students engaged physically with another student-with or without special needs.

I did it. I quit my job and went into an alternative certification program. I received full teacher salary four weeks after I quit my former job.

So, stupid? Hardly.

Try researching before you tell the people WITH experience what their lives are like. If that program doesn’t work for you, I’m happy to point out others… including the one I did.

And if you decide you won’t switch to teaching, then don’t come to DCUM and tell us how good we presumably have it.

Yeah, might want to figure that out.

RW garbage.

It seems like a lot of what they publish is just their supposition and opinion to support their far-right agenda.

I don’t see it as far-right. I see it as… moderate.

I suppose if you are MoCo progressive, however, anything moderate appears far right.

I do, and yes, right-wing, though I expect he's sincere in his belief that HE is the moderate and EVERYONE ELSE is the extremists.

This is why things never seem to improve in our county. Whenever someone brings up serious issues, like violence in schools (which we all know is a real problem), people start name-calling. It just derails the whole conversation and makes it hard to focus on what really matters. We need to stay on topic and have a mature discussion about these issues if we want to make any real progress in solving them.

"right-wing" is name-calling now?

DP here. It seems that “right wing” is often used to encompass anything that is right of progressive, even liberal to moderate opinions.

I agree with the PP. This does tend to shut down conversations. I am liberal and fully support SROs, and I’ve been called right wing on DCUM for that view. I also don’t care for restorative Justice as a solution to school violence, and I was labeled right wing for that view, as well.
