Bill Ackman forgives wife for plagiarism

Anonymous
OK. Well when she becomes president of an institution you can yammer on. What she was in the past is barely relevent. In fact, she may know much more about the inner workings and skeletons in MIT’s closet than any of us do.

Whether or not this is true, she is not the president of an academic institution who cited that condemning threats to a group of people at an organization that she was responsible for depended on the context.

No comparison. Again, what-about-ism is astonishing
. That’s all you folks can do. Schoolyard chants and ridiculous “I know you are but what am I” retorts. Rah rah team

No, Oxman is not the president of an academic institution BUT, she was once a professor at a very prestigious one--MIT. And her husband is on a mission to take down first the Harvard president and is now going after the president and the entire faculty of MIT. Remember what this whole story started as--a congressional inquiry into accusations of anti-semitism on some campuses. Why has it morphed into an anti-DEI, anti-elite university crusade? Context is very important in this case. You can close your eyes and just focus on one narrow piece of the story--whether the Oxam's plagiarism--and its import--is equivalent or not to that of Gay, but there is a lot more going on here. Use the "critical thinking skills" that your party likes to talk about so much.

I would be totally fine revoking both Gay’s and Oxman’s PhDs due to plagiarism, along with those of other academics discovered to have plagiarized to the extent that their university code of conduct is violated. Are you okay with that? If so we are in agreement.

Yes, I'm okay with that. I was in a PhD program once so I get why plagiarism is so wrong. It's just that it's being done in a highly political, public context and that is what is troubling me. It's like a new type of McCarthyism aimed at academics. Outing academic plagiarists has become a political weapon.

I myself couldn't give a darn about either one of their degrees. But I do care that one person is being prosecuted and another forgiven for the same crime. And I really, really care that the prosecutor can do this so openly.

Ackman is a POS actor in this drama. If you supported what he did in bringing about Gay’s ouster and you also support his actions and words in defending his wife, who apologized for her plagiarism 13 years later and only after getting caught, you are likewise an unmitigated POS.

Not open for debate. Own your hypocrisy.

Take them all down re plagiarism. Losing a phd title will really only affect those in research and academia. I’ve got no problem with that at all. I’m so tired of being lectured by these elites.

And of course Ackman's wife was never president of Harvard, which you'd think would expect the highest academic standards of its president.

There is a whole thread on Harvard's president resignation.

This one is about the hypocrisy of Ackman instantaneously forgiving his wife just hours after finishing off the other lady.

Echoes of Harvey Dent?

but I was just pointing out the two cases are completely different, largely because of the positions of the two women. If Ackman's wife was president of MIT, she probably should have resigned also.

Wait.... are you trying to make this be about the wife and not him???

If I got a kid expelled from my daughter's school because she plagiarized - and then a day later praised my kid for "admitting to it" then I would be a world class clown. Same thing here. This guy is a clown that everyone has to be on eggshells around because he is 3000 feet tall and vengeful.

Yes because his wife acknowledged her (4) mistakes immediately. Gay has never even acknowledged her (allegedly 50) mistakes at all. I'd be proud of my wife too if I was Ackman.

There’s new information. She plagiarized way more than 4 times. She lifted entire sections from Wikipedia without attribution at least 15 times. And there are more examples that you can see for yourself. It’s not a handful of mistakes – – it’s a pattern.

Who lifts from Wikipedia for a dissertation??!!!

Bill Ackman’s wife.

How are they lecturing you? Do you work or study in an academic institution? If not, I can't imagine what academics say or do has much impact on your personal life.

And why the word "elites" to describe academics. Do you disapprove of their level of education or is it a social class thing? I know lots of academics that came from modest backgrounds and worked very hard for a long time to get where they are because they love the work.

Sadly, I do have to deal w academics and “think tank” types who hold themselves in very high regard, shall I say elite status. Many have never actually produced outside of these protected/tenured/fellow bubbles, which is not lost on me. But boy do they think they are always right. So yes….first person account.

Okay, that's legit. And I've worked with a lot of smug lawyers and lobbyists, among others, who act the same way. You should see what my SIL, who's a nurse, has to say about doctors. There are a lot of self-important people in the workforce, especially in the DC area. When I think of "elites," I think of the multi-millionaire/billionaire class, not educated people in general. But clearly that word means different things to different people. But I appreciate your response and wish there were more opportunities to engage in good faith in this forum.

There is absolutely nothing NOTHING elite about college professors. They collect paychecks and, if they are careful, stretch them through summer vacation.

"Elite" is a trust fund managed by a hedge fund.

Elites are any one who have an outsized view of their importance, imo. Intellectual, financial/economic, political…all the same to me. I detest them all.

He demonstrates zero intellectual or moral consistency in his positions, and DEI only matters to him if it's about antisemistism but not for anyone else. Other than his Judaism he is your basic privileged rich white guy who thinks he is smarter than everyone else and that the world should revolve around him. It's only a matter of time before he runs for office as Trunp 2.0.

He is white, male, and rich, what does his religion have to do with his obnoxious stance?

My point obviously is that he uses his status in a minority religion as a convenient cudgel and to justify his behavior.

This 10000000%

I am not sure how one can get to adulthood and not realize that humans are inherently self interested. Elites are fundamentally protected from the undesirable outcomes of most bad policies. It’s completely normal that a rich white man wouldn’t see the insidious effects of DEI until the “oppressed” came for him. I credit him for doing the work the educate himself about DEI and taking bold and unpopular stance instead of capitulating to the mob.

He is a pompous ass billionaire who probably has a lower tax rate than 99.9% of the posters of this site. Disgusting.

My kids 6th grade teacher has a doctorate and think pretty damn well of herself - but she's no elite. She's smart enough to know that!

Bad attitude plus a day job = just another nobody. But give them a billion dollars and "elite" really starts meaning something
