Bill Ackman forgives wife for plagiarism

People DO seem care that her give no quarter bare knuckle brawler husband is suddenly so magnanimous.

Hypocrisy doesn't even begin to describe it

Ackman seemed to go off the rails and become a total social media addict in the year or two after he divorced his first wife. I'd love to hear the thoughts of his first wife on the evolution of his public persona.

Like Musk, the guy is perpetually online and weighing on so many issues below his pay grade. I have to assume his hedge fund is on auto-pilot and run by his deputies.

This is about academics, not politics.

There is nothing beyond his pay grade. He can afford to push his every bete noire into the news feeds of every human being on planet Earth. And he does. When he wants to build something up it is built up. When he wants to tear something down it is torn down.

This mercurial Gulliver is frightening to lilliputians like me

Ackman's wife acknowledged her errors immediately. Gay still hasn't done that.
And of course Ackman's wife was never president of Harvard, which you'd think would expect the highest academic standards of its president.

There is a whole thread on Harvard's president resignation.

This one is about the hypocrisy of Ackman instantaneously forgiving his wife just hours after finishing off the other lady.

Echoes of Harvey Dent?

but I was just pointing out the two cases are completely different, largely because of the positions of the two women. If Ackman's wife was president of MIT, she probably should have resigned also.

Ackman's wife was a tenured professor of MIT and then left after she married a billionaire. She plagiarized four times in her MIT doctoral dissertation. It's a big f#cking deal in her professional circles.

American proles love a cold dish of egg-on-their-face served up to a bunch of mouthy elite rich people. The irony is so rich given that Ackman was frothing at the mouth for a week straight about Gay's plagiarism.

To point this out does not excuse Gay. But it does show that sometimes its best to not join the mob, lest you draw attention to the sins within your own house.

Wait.... are you trying to make this be about the wife and not him???

If I got a kid expelled from my daughter's school because she plagiarized - and then a day later praised my kid for "admitting to it" then I would be a world class clown. Same thing here. This guy is a clown that everyone has to be on eggshells around because he is 3000 feet tall and vengeful.

Yes because his wife acknowledged her (4) mistakes immediately. Gay has never even acknowledged her (allegedly 50) mistakes at all. I'd be proud of my wife too if I was Ackman.

It was always about getting scalps and punching down. First Bill punched down on students, threatening with expulsion. Then Gay's poor hearing performance (they all were bad) and he went hunting for her scalp. Billy has no problem punching down but is mute with other billionaires - who have REAL POWER, not just a college student - say horrible antisemitic things. I hope his wife gets dragged. boo, f-ing, hoo.

I would say if she was in a position of academic power like Gay, she should resign. But there is nothing for her to resign from. And of course if she is asked to somehow revoke her MIT thesis, that same standard needs to be applied to Gay, which would then require Gay to give up her large salary and cushy teaching job.

Gay is keeping the large salary and cushy teaching job likely because its in the Harvard Corporation's best interest (and cheaper than the alternative) to keep her happy. It is also likely a provision in her employment contract.

Executives pre-negotiate golden parachutes for themselves. That's how the real world works.

Right, but the point is if Oxman is forced to revoke/withdraw her thesis for four instances, Gay will have to do it for fifty. And in that case, Gay is probably a candidate for her employment to be terminated because she is no longer qualified (no PhD) for the position.

In other words all the people screaming incoherently for Oxman’s thesis to be withdrawn or revoked don’t understand what they are demanding. That situation is worse for Gay, not better.

I could see a world where Oxman actually does that, to force the situation for Gay.

You do realize that MIT and Harvard are different universities, right?

Further, you do not need a PhD to be a professor.

Regardless, nothing bad will happen to either of these women. MIT will leave Oxman alone because he husband is a billionaire donor. Harvard will leave Gay alone because she knows where all the bodies are buried at Harvard and they are likely bound by an employment contract (cheaper to pay her than fire her and lose in litigation).

How in the world can you punch down on the president of Harvard.

Here's a lesson: Don't pursue a role that is going to expose your misdeeds in a way that will humiliate and harm you.

Unless Gay hasn't actually been harmed - seems like she's still doing just fine. And instead of being shunned, now she's a very well paid folk hero for a whole bunch of anti-semites.
