It's basically viewed as: (1) not as good as Virginia Tech, much less U.Va; (2) full of kids from New Jersey and New York who couldn't get into the top SUNY schools or Rutgers; (3) full of hooligans who riot after any significant athletic event; and (4) located in an exceptionally dumpy part of the DC region, with none of the atmosphere that one would desire from a college town. Hopkins is better, but it's a niche school for pre-professionals, rather than a well-rounded liberal arts school, and it's also located near a dangerous part of Baltimore.

Yes, Montgomery County has some nice suburbs, and less congestion than NoVa, but from an educational standpoint Maryland is basically flyover territory.

DCer here so I don't really care about whether MD or VA schools are better but I just met with dd's college counselor last week and he told us that Rutgers would be a safety school for her while College Park would be a stretch. I think, pp, you are living in the past.

I really find it interesting to read these college threads and some of the private school threads. In general I think many people remember the reputation of school "X" or college "Y" 10, 15, 20 or more years ago and think it applies today. Are they ever in for a surprise.

I'm not disparaging UMd, verygood school esp. if you're a solid B student. UVa different matter, will need a 4.1 GPA to get in on average.

someone keeps repeating the same incorrect facts about pulitizers et al. There's no contest between UVA and UMD. UVA is ranked much, much higher on the US News Rankings. I don't have a dog in the fight, but as Dr. Phil would say..."get real".

same, same - but maybe we're thinking of undegraduate eduction. Uva is more highly regarded by far, as well as the Law School.
UMD the university as a whole, however, does have some famous faculty, economics dept., athletic programs etc. that must have given them more points in that world ranking he keeps referring to.

World University rank is less subjective than U.S News which has vested interests but Like I said Uva is for lawyers....Umd is for the hard stuff..... The things society can really use like Math, Chemistry...Journalsm....Physics...Computer Science....ect...Thats why Umd Grads Invent google, underarmour, artificial pancreas, pulse doppler radar, the muppets, seinfeld, the wire, the universal price code, the jumbotron, launched sirius satelllite, imbeded defibulator, minature insulin pumps, the octane system, frequent flyer systems, linear programming etc..... I must admit though...Uva grads can do a mean real-estate settlement and title document prep.

Actually, the only surprise would be if the kids from Maryland stopped pining to go out-of-state to Virginia universities, and kids from Arlington and Fairfax started to covet admission to U. Md. That would be a sea change in attitudes.

Actually when a Virginina grad actually accomplishes something useful and needed.....That will be a sea change. In the mean-time....continue to use Google!

One interesting development in the last year is that the Big Ten is courting Umd to leave the ACC. The Big Ten is more acedemically in line with Umd...reasearch/development/science etc...Umd is alot like Wisconsin/Michigan/Penn state. The Big Ten is not interested in any other ACC schools. The Acc is scared to death about losing Umd...as well as the Washington DC TV market. If Maryland leaves the Acc there will be a musical chairs scramble out of the Acc and whoever is left in the Acc will be in bad shape.

I heard the Big Ten is totally enamored by Umd. They love Umds World University Rank and ties to Sergi Brin asn well as Kevin Plank. The Big Ten Covets The DC TV market as well as in-roads to Federal R&D Budgets through Umd. Umd would have to step it up in football...but the Big Ten wants to expand in lacrosse. They love Maryland Basketball and the entire atheletic dept..

They are also trying to create a conference so attractive that Notre Dame will have to join.
