Mary Lou Retton has no health insurance

Not really. She could use a better haircut, though.

My question that I'm wrestling with: does she deserve to die for this? One less person to vote Republican, but four daughters without their mother. I think they're like 28, 26, 23 and 21 - surely MLR can sell the mansion and downsize.

Why does she have to die for this? She has assets she can sell to fund her care. She chose to gamble and lost, but she's in the position where she can still afford treatment

It doesn't sound like she's physically well enough to make financial or legal decisions. If she was irresponsible enough to NOT have health insurance, then it's plausible she was also irresponsible enough to have not created a will or Power of Attorney.

Maybe it's the perfect example that those without insurance are still provided hospital and ICU care, contrary to common beliefs.

But the rest of us may be paying for it.

Doesn't her estate need to pay her debts before whatever's left goes to her heirs, though?

The "estate" will be asked to pay debtors from the the remaining assets, but if there's not enough money there, the estate will be declared insolvent and the debts written off. Children and heirs are not on the hook for debts of the deceased.

Uh, no. Try again.

Hoping she recovers.

and why it's important we all support some type of universal healthcare, otherwise you might not be as fortunate as MLR to get a large gofundme donation to pay your medical bills.

If there isn't insurance and she passes, the bills will be written off (and essentially paid for by the rest of us).

Children of the deceased are not obligated to pay medical debts.

If she had no money, I don't think the hospital could come after her family. But she has assets.

Medical expenses are the first item paid from an estate. There’s an order as to what gets paid first for an estate. What’s left goes to heirs. BUT, I believe if a trust fund is st up correctly then the bills may not get paid.

This is not even remotely accurate. I am 50 and have been on Obamacare since it started and without subsidies I have paid between 400 and 650. But that’s only because I choose really good ppo plans.

Oh I guess I did pay 1200 for that plan briefly in Virginia.

But DC and Maryland, no.

In SC the plans range between 100 and 400.

Again this is with no subsidies.

So maybe her daughter is setting up this go fund me to protect her own inheritance.

Unfortunately, that’s not how it works. You need to enroll during open enrollment or experience a qualifying event.

I wonder if her daughters know anything about her finances. It's not like they have to pay these bills right away--have they even gotten a bill yet? I wouldn't be surprised that Mary Lou knows nothing of the go fund me.

They are high on the list of things paid, but not first.

With some variances by state, generally funeral expenses and taxes must be paid before medical expenses are paid. Medical expenses do have a high priority among debtors, though.

The fundraiser is at $265,000 less than a day into its opening. Wow. People are generous. Comments they're writing with their gifts are heartfelt. I would never donate to something like this.

This makes me disgusted. That people will give to a multimillionaire who chose not to purchase health insurance, but not to their local homeless shelter (as an example).

Think setting up a go fund me is almost automatic for the daughter’s generation, so I’m not sure you can read much into it.

That said, I also don’t think you can assume there is much endorsement money left, if there was ever much at all.
