Take off a week in school year to go to disney

Anonymous
We've done it 2x, no issues- once to Disney, once to go to South Africa to visit a family member studying abroad. Have fun!
Anonymous
I did it twice. I even told teachers in advance. No problem at all.

We end up needing to shave a couple of days at Christmas every year just to be able to make the trek to visit family and get there in time for the holidays (we drive, not fly, which could cause other problems). MCPS calendar just organically cuts it very close. In ES this was not a problem, but we don't want to create problems in MS and HS with things like tests. Have to just watch all of the schedules very closely, try to leave as close to the holidays as possible, and hope for decent weather on the road.

Cool! This is not the thread for you. Bye!

Why so dismissive? Jeez.

Doesn’t add to the conversation. It’s like asking, “has anyone flown Delta before” and someone piping in, “no, we always travel by Amtra, tut-tut for flying”. Who gives AF, either answer the question or don’t bother chiming in.

Sounds like you’re uncomfortable with anyone disagreeing with you.

No, just tired of people thinking their 2c matters when they can’t stay on topic.

The topic is taking your kids out of school for Disney. How was I off topic?

The topic is asking for experiences with taking the kids out during the school year. No one cares that you’re the mommiest mom to ever mom and follow the school calendar to a tee.

I posted factually. Go after the people calling you all hypocrites and bad parents, rather than me.

Aww, are you upset that you are worthless in this conversation? Shouldn’t you be working right now and not wasting your employer’s time on this site? Since you’re such a rule follower and all.

I’m on vacation. Sitting in the Delta lounge as I type, waiting to board my plane.

Again with the useless information!

It’s a direct response to you accusing me of slagging off work.

Yeah, but no one cares.

You cared enough to tell me to get back to work.

You’re a loser

Go do your homework, Jimmy.

My kids are in high school now (and doing very well) and we took them out for a week when they were in elementary school.

Back then, the calendar allowed for stuff like that more easily. Around MLK day/end of January, there used to be 4 day weekends in the calendar. Plus another day off. That was such a great time to go.

With comments as stupid as that one, yeah — I think it has to be teenagers so dumb that they’re in remedial summer school.

High school teacher here.

I agree with this. Don’t make extra work for me so your child can take a vacation. I’m already overloaded doing the work of two, so I’m going to feel rather resentful when I’m spending two hours creating a packet of work because some admin told me to, even though this is an unexcused absence. Also don’t be upset at me when your child does poorly on the next assessment since they weren’t in class as we covered the material.

This happens to me regularly and all this extra work piles up. It’s one of the many reasons I’m ready to quit.

(If your kid is in the hospital, I’ll go to great lengths to help out. I’ll Zoom, create alternative units, etc. Disney or the equivalent? Not the same.)

Exactly. You hear that, you selfish people?

I sure did. “High school.” Loud and clear.

That’s why we are talking about doing this kind of thing *in elementary school.*

If you do that you have lost all rights to complain about the quality of your kids’ education, their teachers, the school system, etc ever again. You’re making very clear (both to the school and your kids) that education isn’t a top priority.

Plus at least one million. Thank you.

I think the parents with their undies in a bunch about this are mad that their kids whine about not going on good trips when our kids get back and say why they’ve been out of school.

Because school doesn’t matter as much in ES?

Yes. My 6 year old is so jealous of your kid’s Disney trip, given that in her 6 years of life, she’s been to:

- WDW 4 times
- England
- Italy
- Sweden
- Estonia
- Finland
- Arizona
- California
- NYC countless times
- Hawaii twice

But yep. Jealousy is definitely it, because as you’ve so rightly implied, it’s not possible to go on good trips unless your kid misses school.

Sorry, I forgot France.

And next year, she’ll go to LA, Alaska, and likely Scotland.
