Take off a week in school year to go to disney

Anonymous
We want to take kids to go to Disney. Both kids attend same elementary school. The long time lining up at Disney world sounds painful to me, and we are thinking to pull kids out during school year to do so. Will that hurt anything for school report records? And, how bad is it to tell teacher/administration that is due to we are going to disney world?

If you have done it before, which month is the best to go to Disney World for shorter lines, pleasant weather and good deals?

The week after Thanksgiving or the first week of December is the lowest crowd week. Also first week of May.

Do NOT go in February, March or April - lots of schools have breaks then.

Nothing will happen unless they go over 18 missed days which is considered chronically absent. Even then, nothing will happen. Don't expect teachers to give your kids work ahead of time though.

We don’t take DD out of school for vacations. We use her breaks for that.

It’s fine. We do it every year, cept not for Disney.

Veterans 3day rap around is better and less crowded

Absolutely. Go during elementary school - it gets harder later.

First full week of December. Thanksgiving crowds are gone, Xmas break crowds haven't started...most people don't want to travel in between the holidays. Parks are beautifully decorated for the holiday. Weather is mild and perfect.

Or first two weeks of May, but the weather isn't as nice and no cool Xmas decorations. September is also usually low crowd, but that's hurricane season and it's still so hot and sticky.

I feel like this question comes up frequently. Conventional wisdom is that it’s fine while in elementary school; more of a mixed bag of opinions re middle school; no go for high school. And do not expect teachers to go out of their ways to accommodate.

I think it’s extremely obnoxious to take kids out of school for stuff like Disney. If you do that you have lost all rights to complain about the quality of your kids’ education, their teachers, the school system, etc ever again. You’re making very clear (both to the school and your kids) that education isn’t a top priority.

We went in late January last year (avoid MLK weekend) and it was great. Low crowds, the weather was cool but sunny, and it was not at all a big deal for DD to miss some school. I wouldn't go for a whole week though, unless you plan to do some "hotel days" in there. It was not really swimming weather so I wouldn't plan on using the pools.

I completely agree. We enjoy going to Disney and to a lot of other places, but have never taken our kid out of school for it. I think it sends a horrible message to your kid.

If your kids don't struggle academically, it'll be fine. You can get them caught up.

Op here. My kids are in love of outdoor pool and outdoor water park. Any other shorter line month for weather good enough to go to pool?

Absolutely false. Took my children (now very productive, college graduates and gainfully employed adults) to Disney twice when they were in ES. Education is a top priority. So is family. And life experience. And joy.
