Separation of Church and State. Can't let a religion dictate what is taught in public schools.

Nah, MCPS should take a poll and it will be very clear, very quickly that normal population does not want 5 year old kids to get this non-sense ideas related to gender change. Nothing to do with religion. Every parent wants to protect their kids. The same population is much more comfortable to have this discussion in middle and high school.

More power to religious folks to fight this cause, but it's not religion vs secular issue. It's issue of parents not wanting to indoctrinate their kids.

We had a poll in 2022. We will have another poll in 2024. And another one in 2026. And...

In their most recent legal filing, MCPS agrees with you that it is not a religion vs. secular issue: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1L0BKX9u-EuvS8B2pkvB0zY58eqUsDSfg/view

I am also not religious, but I have two degrees in Science and everything I have been taught makes me comfortable with the concept that gender is an assigned quality. It is not something that you can change.

I also don't want MCPS teaching my elementary school aged kid that he can change his gender. That is simply not true. He can wear dresses and enjoy 'girly' activities. But, he is a boy doing that.

MCPS has gone too far with this. I hope this lawsuit gains some traction and I hope the protesters get their voices heard.

Lol. If you really had a degree in science you would understand gender and biological sex are two different things. Please leave the field. You are an embarrassment to us.

Unfortunately, teachers in other public schools are bullying religious students who do not conform. This is scary stuff, and I wonder if this is already happening on some scale at MCPS. I hope that if it is, the teachers are called out. This has to stop.

It is inappropriate to teach six year old kids about changing their gender. MCPS should not be teaching that.

We don’t teach lessons on various sexual positions to middle schoolers in their MCPS Family Life Unit. Why is that? Because it would be inappropriate.

Same thing here.

MCPS is in the wrong here, for sure. And I believe the law suit will support that.

The parents here simply want to be able to opt their kids out of being indoctrinated in an inappropriate manner.

The parents who want their kids to change genders can still buy the books on Amazon and read them to their kids.

This isn’t something that needs to be forced into every single elementary school aged kid in MCPS.

It is happening in MCPS...they just haven't gotten caught yet. It's just a matter of time.

This mentality is very similar to the crazies that wanted to keep schools closed during covid. Those policies were proven to be the wrong approach with the data now available on learning loss, mental health, obesity and other problems caused by the closures. This is just another policy that will be proven to be wrong by data that will be gleaned over the next year or so. Just wait.

For years gender was commonly understood to be the polite term to refer to biological sex. For cultures that were shocked by ankles and required fig leaves for statues, “gender” was a much more refined and acceptable term than “sex”. Relatively recently, academics decided to redefine gender as something separate from sex.

Languages evolve and words get redefined. That seems to be currently happening with “gender”, but the widespread cultural debate seems a clear indication that that redefinition is not complete. You can certainly describe the difference between biological sex and what you call gender. You can define gender however you wish. But a new definition doesn’t automatically make an older definition wrong. Moreover, even if a new definition is universally adopted, it doesn’t mean that the concept behind the new definition has more merit than the concept behind another definition, even an obsolete one.

Basically, the while point of language is communication. In areas where there is disagreement on how to define a term, it might behoove both sides to drop the term altogether and instead speak directly to the concept they were trying to convey by using the disputes term. The respective arguments need to be evaluated on their actual merits. Dismissing an argument because they’re using a term “wrong” may be convenient, but it is bad logic amd blocks communication.

Not true.

My kid just finished 5th grade and had lessons on Family Life.

Taught by his homeroom teacher.

Luckily the state of Maryland gives parents the right to opt out of the Family Life Units taught in elementary and middle school.

I’m sure if MCPS had its way, it would force it on all kids.

But in this case, MCPS seems to be trying to get around the state law that allows parents to opt out. By reading these books as part of the Language Arts curriculum.

From the MCPS website, there is a Family Life Unit in 5th grade:

^^^sorry, posted before thinking. There is a separate Family Life Unit in elementary school for fifth graders, who are not six years old. There is also Family Life incorporated into health education in the general curriculum. For example, here it is for kindergarten: https://www2.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/curriculum/health/elementary/kindergarten/familylife

A. Family Unit
4.K.A.1. Define a family unit.
4.K.A.1.a.
Describe what is a family.
4.K.A.1.b.
Label who is in your family.
4.K.A.1.c.
Explain/Interpret where you fit in your family structure.
4.K.A.1.d.
Analyze family structures in media.

And here it is for first grade:

A. Family Unit
4.1.A.1. Identify what is special about your family.
4.1.A.1.a.
List members of your family.
4.1.A.1.b.
Describe the special traits about each member of your family.
4.1.A.1.c.
Recognize differences in family structure and custom.
B. Physical, Mental, and Social Growth
4.1.B.1.
Describe the process of growth.
4.1.B.1.a.
Explain how height and weight relate to the growth process.

I agree with this completely.
