Yes. My kid’s school (the students on the campus environmental committee) has requested that students bring as little as possible and also to forgo the use of foam toppers. |
Headboard seems stupid to me - if the roommate wants one great - if your daughter wants one great - but if she isn't into it just say "I'm not getting one" and move on. My daughter had the cutest space that was quite different from her roommates and it was fine - they don't have to match. |
You can get matching twin headboards at Goodwill? |
Has your kid slept on the mattresses yet? I am also opposed to waste, but those mattresses are terrible. Cut the headboard but keep the topper. Also, you can reuse the toppers or pass them along to younger sib or friend. At one of my kids’ schools someone collected used toppers and made them into dog beds for shelters. I thought that was brilliant. My kids kept them in their apartments and sometimes when a friend slept over they used it as a mattress on the floor and covered it with a blanket. |

That would be a request I ignore. You absolutely need a mattress topper. Unless you like sleeping on the ground. My kids are pretty minimalist about their rooms but that was the one thing they absolutely needed. |
DD reluctantly bought a foam topper for her 8 week internship staying in a dorm. She just could not sleep on the mattress and it was a new lovely dorm otherwise. |
I would just see this as a good reason for them to be in touch, hopefully get to know each other and bond a little prior to the start of school which are all good things.
Specifically to the headboard, I think they are common in dorm rooms as there is limited seating and it makes it easier to sit in bed and lean against something versus the wall. Don’t overreact—her roomie wanting to coordinate and work together is a great thing. |
The question is which is a bigger DCUM deal, freshman roommate asking about headboards OR displaying family photos on hallway wall in the house? |
You are way too invested in your daughters college roommates decor choices. Let your daughter handle this. |
On the net? Great Aunt Doris is that you |
My neighbor said she spent over $1000 decorating her DD's dorm room last year. That's a lot of money IMO. |
Well, too bad. If they want to upgrade the disgusting mattresses, that's one thing. But since no school is going to do this, foam toppers it is. |
Is that all you can fixate on? Are you aware of all the other things one can find at the above places? No one has to get a matching headboard if they choose not to. ![]() |
I don't even have a headboard on my bed and it's a twin bed too. Thank God I have a boy who was surprised that I asked him what he was going to bring to school. He said "I'll just bring my stuff from home." He doesn't care that his comforter will be too small. I did buy him a set of XL sheets but other than that, he's good to go. |
