No, it’s protecting my identity. What I said was NOT wrong.

So you say. I had a guy at work rant at me about how he was labeled a racist for saying we are all IMMIGRANTS here unless we are native, and what is racist about that?
Honestly, at this point, you are coming as horribly defensive and a bigot. Narcissist as well.

Are you trying to say the guy at work said something wrong?

Yes, 100%. I am an immigrant here; he is not.I immigrated to this county, whereas his family was colonists. Are we calling colonists immigrants now? No doubt this is op, who is a bigot.

How do you know his family were colonists? Don't assume that is true for all white people.

I always thought that people joined the mob because they were afraid that if they didn't the mob would turn on them. Here, we're anonymous, so that's far less likely. I'm sorry to see that people are still ganging up on someone who's vulnerable. Maybe shocked as much as sorry.

OP, I believe you, for what it's worth. Your attackers sound like angry, self-righteous people and you're better off away from them.

That is unrelated to cancelling people.

You can believe me or not. It happened. People will use sensitivity on these issues to make something sound racist that isn’t. They know lots of people are eager to pick up torches.

For what it’s worth, my therapist, who knows everything and has even seen all the emails and texts about this event, is a member of the group I supposedly spoke against and she is fairly horrified that a bunch of white people used what I said in the way they did. No oppressed minority group was aided by my cancellation, it didn’t make anything safer, more equal, or more tolerant. The opposite, the handful of people who know the truth now know they must be extra careful about what they say and do because even benign comments can be twisted against you if you get on the bad side of the wrong people.

Glad your therapist speaks for the entire group.

A lot of people join the mob because it feels good. I think many people walk around full of suppressed range and a mob gives them an opportunity to unleash it on someone deemed deserving. But mobs are not great about fact checking or understanding nuance. Anyone who joins in on a mob based solely on a single rumor isn’t really interested in justice, they are just excited about an socially confined excuse to unleash their fury.

Bcs he said We Are All Immigrants Here.

My family (poor, uneducated immigrants from Ireland and Germany) immigrated to the US around the turn of the 20th century with nothing. I come from an immigrant family. I'm 4th gen and feel extremely fortunate about the sacrifices they made, but I also don't forget where I came from. If I said the US is "a nation of immigrants" does that make me a colonist and a bigot?

I find it very hard to believe that someone who was "cancelled" AT WORK, suffering some degree of career threat as well as emotional upset so extreme that a therapist was involved, would then open a thread on it on DCUM--merely in order to perform the public service of informing people that this happens, in the abstract.

OP I believe you and I am sorry it happened. TAR is a the movie that shows taking things out of context and using them against the person very well.
Yes it is best to avoid some topics altogether. No way I am discussing anything around any hot topics except with my friends.

No one else cared at all, particularly not my other friend, whose Middle Eastern origins had been the center of the joke. Everyone understood that I, a multiracial individual who was always kind to everyone, was not racist. But I learned from this that had my circle been more susceptible to group-think and performative virtue signaling, I could easily have lost friends and disappointed teachers and administration.

So I learned early on to be politically correct except with very close friends and relatives who understand that good humor is transgressive by definition. Nothing in writing, nothing that can be recorded, nothing on social media. And I teach my kids this.

I entirely agree with your point, OP. Virtue signaling from not very intelligent people who crave to fit in are a plague, because they don't think for themselves at all. All they do is misapply valid notions of tolerance and respect, but turn them around to use as tools of discrimination.

I'm outwardly PC, and keep the funny comments at home.

Can’t disagree with you, but also feel sad about it

Anonymous wrote:OP I think what happened to you is that everyone already didn’t like you, for whatever reason. People who are liked and respected don’t get “canceled” for one mistake or ill-considered comment. If these were your colleagues, there was already a problem.

But people often don’t like someone for reasons that are not that person’s fault. What if someone has a mental illness that made them a bummer to be around? If someone started a nasty untrue rumor about that person, people might be eager to believe it because it gives them a “good” reason to dislike someone.

People are not always justified in their distaste for other people. Being unpopular is not actually evidence that you are a bad person.

I don’t have to justify my dislike for anyone.

Good for you. Many people do. Most people are not very independent thinkers and are looking for validation and justification all the time. That’s why starting a little mob is so easy— people like being told what to think, and they like having their worst instincts channeled toward what they’ve been told us a “just cause” even if it’s just attacking someone for something they didn’t do.

Except OP said something racist.

No, I did not. Not even a little racist, not a racist joke. Not racist at all. There is no way to view what I said as racist unless you lie about the words that were said around the comment and invent a context that was not in place when I said it.

That’s why it is dangerous to even say “black/Asian/any race people”. Because all the rest can be twisted

That’s why you never touch these topics IRL with a 10 ft pole

Of course it was. Thank you for being the poster child for racists that never believe they are racist. It’s too bad you haven’t taken the time to reflect on your bigotry.

Jesus, are you a right-wing troll trying to make the left look foolish? Because you are succeeding. You sound like an idiot, PP. Stop your knees from jerking uncontrollably before you post again.

+1. Ironically, these posters are proving OP’s point.

I’m sorry that happened to you, OP, and I 100% believe it could.

exactly
So many dramatic people eager to put a spin on things
That’s why to not give them the satisfaction we should not ever discuss politics or social issues or anything related to race, EVER
except with good friends who of course don’t include these people

These posters jumping on the cancellation bandwagon without even knowing what was said are what’s wrong with this country.
There’s a big change coming, and I honestly can’t wait. This ridiculousness can’t last much longer.

I repeat: I am under no obligation to like you.

What does that have to do with what happened to OP?

Yes, people would assume my ancestors were "colonists" but they were fairly recent immigrants.

OP wants to spread grievance and it shows.
