Is Advanced Math when kids come into the AAP class for math? Or is it its own class? |
It depends on your school. Our school separates kids in 5th grade into classes based on Advanced Math or regular math. We are using the cluster model from LLIV. |

NNAT/CoGAT: 140 GBRS (if known): unknown, asking the AART, she might get back to me after Spring break School or center: Canterbury Woods In/not in: not in She was automatically referred , I just submitted 1 page work sample and Parent Questionnaire. I did not know that the GBRS weights that much, should have been focusing more on getting great work samples. Do you all think an appeal would work? |
I'd definitely appeal (it's always worth a shot) but will be important to see the teacher comments and if a bad/unenthusiastic GBRS might be an issue here. |
Same. The AART last year "got" my quiet, shy, creative 2nd grader and wrote a bang-up GBRS which may have tipped the balance. (DD is doing fine in LIV center.). Different AART now, so not sure what to expect for my son. |
If the issue is GBRS, do you think an appeal would work? I'm about to schedule her for a WISC test at GMU, but not really sure since her CogAT was really good. |
Do you not have an NNAT score? 140 is very good but only one data point. Most kids have NNAT and CogAt. Great GBRS scores are helpful but they are still subjective, so I would want 2 test scores. I suppose if the WISC isn't good, you can drop the appeal. |
What percentage of appeals are accepted? I remember it was 50%? If 100 kids appeal, 50 kids are accepted? |
Historically, it was around 50%. Keep in mind though that this occurred when the WISC was still the golden ticket into AAP. Very few people even tried to appeal without a reasonably high WISC. Nowadays, I would guess that the only kids admitted on appeal are the ones who really should have been admitted the first time. The rate is probably much lower than 50%. |
Nnat/cogat : 140/131 cogat (139quat, 120s for others)
Pyramid: oakton Grade 2 GBRS unknown but the teacher seemed happy with kid at parent conference Not in. It sucks. Ireadys are on grade level or advanced. Is it worth it to get a wisc? |
This isn’t really the way it’s working out. The report said to discount the WISC, but they aren’t actually discounting high WISCs. If you have a high (132+) WISC from GMU, you still have a decent shot at getting in on appeal. But I would think that would only be true if your GBRS are borderline/good and not bad. |
A teacher being happy with a student's progress/behavior has nothing to do with exhibiting gifted behaviors. Also, iReady on grade level doesn't show a need for acceleration. |
