I live in N Arlington and most people I know IRL have sort of mixed feelings about it, but don’t talk about it on a regular basis and are just seeing what happens. The only people I know who have up yard signs and are really vocal about opposing it are the olds who will be out of here in the coming years anyway. Maybe this will make them sell off early, who knows. It’s a major stretch to say it’s tearing the community apart. |
“Mixed feelings” = being personally against it but afraid to voice opposition because of fear of what people might think about you. This is the beauty of messaging that somehow MM is anti-racist and that SFH = racist when there is zero evidence that MM will increase the proportion of Black homeowners in Arlington. |
That's on you, though? Have the courage of your convictions. |
Yes, you should absolutely blame the victims who will be falsely accused of being racist or otherwise being “the man” if they question the YIMBY motives or methods. Look at them, being concerned about their neighborhoods. The nerve of not buying the narrative! And did you see what they were wearing? |
You're comparing to public discourse to rape-victim blaming?
|
+1 Plus why does everyone assume all POC are low income? |
The principal and vice principal. |
A YIMBY blasted me on their Facebook page because I said my family owned a number of properties that we would be selling as older relatives move to other care or died. However, we would sell them to builders who want to do single family homes because the process we had used in the past was the most lucrative and easiest for the relatives and families. I was called a privileged white man who was a racist, misogynist, elitist who did not care about Arlington because I was a rich lawyer who only stole land so that my McMansion could be built there. Wowee. I am black woman, an Arlington native, whose family is descended from Martha Washington's slaves who were brought to Arlington House by her son. Most of the family homes were built by family members in a now-gentrifying part of Arlington and would be worthless without the land. I joined the Marines at 17, got a GED, got out of the military and created a successful service business. We have no McMansion and 4 happy, healthy kids. |
+1 I am in similar situation. Also not a privileged white man... |
The new principal? |
Wowee. Someone on the Internet was mean to you? Thoughts and prayers in this difficult time!!! |
You’re free to sell to whomever but how is limiting your buyer pool the most lucrative option? Wouldn’t the highest offer be the best, regardless of what the builder is planning for the lot? |
How do you know that selling for SFH is not more lucrative than selling for MM? The reality is that the MM numbers don’t really add up, unless you think people will pay $1 million for a 1 BD in a fourplex without any amenities. |
Oh sounds like the white YIMBY who assumed a black woman couldn’t be a property owner of multiple houses and felt comfortable smearing them in public has found the chat. |
Who needs the internet. If you went to any of the small meetings with ACB members, the ACB board meetings, or any of the YIMBY meetings, they said a lot worse and said it to everyone who did not agree with them. My mom, who taught political science at a top university, was visiting and came to one of the meetings with me. She was literally speechless over the exaggerated claims made by the YIMBYs about the type of housing that would be built in single family neighborhoods and who could afford to buy it. Someone shoved a placard into her hands and told her to hold it up during the meeting if she didn't want to get "kicked out" of Arlington. We made it through about an hour. |
