Unhooked kids - Why is private HS worth the diminished chances for top college admissions?

LOL, about 80 to 85 percent of Whitman and Langley students are white or Asian.

Exactly.

Secondly,
I send my kids to private because
1. I can afford it.
2. because I truly believe that they are getting a great education - much more holistic and healthy than my public education
3. the campus is awesome
4. their teachers are very attentive and helpful
5. awesome peer group

But mostly 1 I bet.

You clearly dislike private schools, so why are you on this board?

They like to sit in their $2 million home and send their kid to a public school that’s 80% white or Asian and under 5% ESOL or FARMS and then deride private school families for sending our kids to schools that are in a bubble of privilege.

Where I come from you went to public if you were poor and/or blue collar and private if you were not. I am amazed at the number of people in the DMV who like public.

Well, if I couldn't afford it, all the remaining reasons wouldn't matter eh? I honestly don't really care where my kid goes to college because I know they will be well rounded, hard workers, and very well educated. It's a privilege to not care, I recognize that. But fundamentally, they aren't relying on college placement to leverage them into some new social strat or position them for jobs in a good industry. Our generation already did that.

We are paying for the peer group.

Where do you come from? I can tell you it wasn't the case at Great Falls and Langley High School in the 80s. Tons of loaded and powerful and influential people sent their kids to public school in NoVa. My friends had some very famous parents in political and other arenas.

A lot of places do not have good public school systems. Fairfax Co Schools were very strong.

not true now, all rich, powerful and influential people, along with all legacies and athletic recruits are required to attend private schools. that's how we know all admissions from private schools are hooked and all admissions from public schools are not.

Why is that? Has FCPS really declined that much?

Yeah the ones who love to go public largely don’t have any poor people in their neighborhoods so the public becomes a Beverly Hills High on 90210 type thing. Or Pacific Palisades.

Just for that? Why not move to the Whitman cluster then and get an overachieving white/ Asian peer group for free?

Anonymous wrote:Probably. We are here for the first 13 years of education, not the 4 that follow. There are many colleges that can give an excellent education, and I feel sure that my kids will get into one of them even if it’s not a “top school”. There are NOT many primary and secondary schools within driving distance for which I can say the same. It was a no-brainer for us.

There have been lots and lots of discussions of this topic. Not sure what new there is to say about it.

Agree. And the peer group, self-confidence, enjoyment, values etc.
And even just not getting stuffed into a locker
