As someone who works at a school with SROs: it does none of those things. They just know not to do their thing in the bathrooms closest to the SRO office.

And some kids aren’t doing drugs bc SRos are there. Waiting to get “all” won’t help. Let’s at least get to deterring “some”.

This is 0% true. The SROs are not in the bathroom. The kids don’t even know who the SRO is. People like you are absolutely clueless about reality. Rather than focus on the real issue you just want to spend imaginary money to fill the school with more people who can’t fix the problem themselves. Delusional.

Um, no. I’m a teacher, and I want them back. I think the kids know that the guy in the police uniform is the SRO. They can’t solve everything, but I think it scares some of them enough not to do stupid things. That’s good enough for me.

Nah, the SRO stands at the front entrance, then wanders around some then goes onto the security office. The kids don’t stop doing that they’re doing because he’s in the building, they just work around him.

We can stop fentanyl from crossing the border. Or, we can continue on this path of destruction.

Exactly. The presence made a noticeable difference.

Does anyone know how the hospitalized student is doing. They and their family have been on my mind so much. I can’t imagine thinking my child is safe at school and then getting a phone call like that.

Surely you cannot be this incredibly stupid.

This article shows how good kids get wrapped up in this. It may not be the dealer at their school, it may be someone online. They may buy some multiple pills and some are real (or not dangerous) and some are deadly. It's like playing with a half loaded gun.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/11/30/fentanyl-fake-pills-social-media/

"From there, investigators were able to piece together the lethal transaction, which was arranged on Snapchat. The dealer, Virgil Bordner, had sold Zach two, maybe three pills that were supposed to be Percocet. The one that killed him was likely the second one he took."

Fentanyl is the leading cause of death for the 18-40 age range. More than suicides, car accidents or gun deaths.

It's a national crisis. Talk to your kids.

I have been wondering too. I hope the family knows so many of us are thinking of them.

Give the SRO a drug dog.

My kid is still little, but what is the downside to dogs? It seems like they’d be less likely to be influenced by societal factors/judgment calls than an SRO. And if they find drugs, they find drugs. I realize the “they were planted” argument will come up no matter what.

I’m not looking to punish kids, but we can’t hug our way out of this. Shouldn’t there be fear of punishment for having illegal drugs on school grounds?

Rookie question here... Can a drug dog sniff out fake pills? Like can they sniff out a pin prick of fentanyl with filler?

I’m the PP and had this question, too. Apparently they can sniff out fentanyl – but because it is so potent, it can be dangerous for the drug-sniffing dogs.

That hit me like a ton of bricks.

I only did a quick google, so I don’t (personally) know how significant the fentanyl presence would have to be for it to trigger the dog.

I suspect there is no perfect solution and it will take a lot of time, money, and effort and APS will hope it doesn’t happen again.

There certainly should be a multi-pronged approach, but this a “supply and demand” issue and if we don’t work on and reverse the reasons for the demand in our youth, the supply will find a way.

Education! One pill can kill. Don’t take random pills, ever. It’s not cool. It’s stupid and the pills are never what you think they are. There were huge public campaigns around drugs in decades past, it’s time to bring them back.
