My kid is still little, but what is the downside to dogs? It seems like they’d be less likely to be influenced by societal factors/judgment calls than an SRO. And if they find drugs, they find drugs. I realize the “they were planted” argument will come up no matter what.

I’m not looking to punish kids, but we can’t hug our way out of this. Shouldn’t there be fear of punishment for having illegal drugs on school grounds?

Rookie question here... Can a drug dog sniff out fake pills? Like can they sniff out a pin prick of fentanyl with filler?

I’m the PP and had this question, too. Apparently they can sniff out fentanyl – but because it is so potent, it can be dangerous for the drug-sniffing dogs.

That hit me like a ton of bricks.

I only did a quick google, so I don’t (personally) know how significant the fentanyl presence would have to be for it to trigger the dog.

I suspect there is no perfect solution and it will take a lot of time, money, and effort and APS will hope it doesn’t happen again.

Fentanyl is very potent.

We lived in an apartment complex - a very upscale one, too - a few years ago and came home to a large police presence outside the building. An officer let us know that a drug raid had been conducted but we would be allowed to enter the building to reach our apartment on the next floor with a police escort within the next 20 minutes. I saw officers/techs coming in and out of the building in full PPE and said something like "holy sh!t! were they making meth here??" and the officer let me know that no, it was a pill ring with fentanyl suspected. He told us that as little as 5oz of fentanyl could kill up to 75,000 people.

The DMV area needs to get on board with places like Philly and NYC and start distributing free fentanyl test strips.

We need to get our heads out of the sand and start setting up Harm Reduction zones with free supplies & disposal boxes.

This is important, many of us grew up thinking an OD meant someone took too much of something. One pill can literally kill. Kids think they're taking a friends adderall or xanax, not an illicit street drug (to their teen brains).

Meridian FCCPS has had one as well.

Huh? My kid goes there and I haven't heard anything about this. An overdose at Meridian?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/2022/11/30/fentanyl-fake-pills-social-media/

"From there, investigators were able to piece together the lethal transaction, which was arranged on Snapchat. The dealer, Virgil Bordner, had sold Zach two, maybe three pills that were supposed to be Percocet. The one that killed him was likely the second one he took."

Are they really "good kids" if they're buying drugs illegally? I feel for those and their families whose mistake led to death because the pill was laced with fentanyl....but we have to keep in mind, the kid CHOSE to buy drugs and CHOSE to take them. No one is shoving these pills down their throat at gunpoint.

You have to stop the kids from wanting to do this. No border measure, SRO in the bathroom, is going to solve the problem.

Are drug addicts really going to use fentanyl test strips on their drugs? Seems pie in the sky to me.

They’ve already launched that in Arlington…

+1. This is the conversation I had with my teen yesterday. It just isn't worth it because the odds are not good. Don't ever take a pill from anyone, even your best friend offering you Adderall to stay up studying. You just can't be 100% sure what's in it and you could literally die the very first time you pop a pill that isn't yours.

This isn't like the days of old when campaigns were trying to make it sound like occasional marijuana use would lead you to being a cocaine addict. I just listened to a podcast this morning that said something like 40% of non-prescription pills have fentanyl. That's seriously scary.

These kids are having a hard week. Sigh….From ArlNow:

Updated at 12:55 p.m.) Wakefield High School has reportedly been placed in lockdown amid a report of a trespasser in the school.
The cause for concern is related to a recent shooting in the Green Valley neighborhood, according to initial reports. There is no indication of any acts of violence inside the school.

^^ I agree. Shut the school tomorrow and just fill it with counselors, pastors, and snacks.
