Yes. And how did the kids in MCPS get their hands on these drugs from China, Mexico, and India? |
Bologna. We could shut down the entire country for weeks in an attempt to contain the virus. We can certainly shut down the influx of drugs. It would require acknowledgeing unpalatable facts and taking action. We would need to hold the countries of origin account able for any substance that leaves their country. We would need to secure boaders, check trade cargo, make large scale arrests and convictions of those in all levels of the supply chain. It can absolutely be done and done quickly. |
We never did this. The “entire country” was not shut down ever, certainly not for weeks and we didn’t contain the virus so what’s your point? |
THIS Our federal government chooses to allow this to happen. There are definite measures our leaders could take to alleviate the problem, but the political will is not there. |
This is the sort of simplistic thinking that works on right-wing radio but not in actual practicality. The United States has almost 2,000 miles of border with Mexico, and another 5,500 miles with Canada. That's just the land borders. Then, we have about 95,000 miles of coastline including more than 300 commercial ports and about 500,000 vessel calls. Every year, we invest more money in CBP, so this is not a funding issue. It's also not a law enforcement issue unless you are willing to make the case that CBP is "soft on crime." This is a demand issue. Reduce demand and you will reduce supply. |
What’s your point? Are you saying that the federal government has no control over which drugs and in what quantities those drugs enter the US? If so, then you are most definitely acknowledging that the US has an issue of porous/open borders. At least we agree on that, I guess. |
Name five measures they could take, keeping in mind that fentanyl mostly arrives via shipping containers from China and India. |
It’s both a supply and demand issue. Also, how do you propose decreasing demand amongst teens? Please let MCPS know as I’m sure they would appreciate it. |
Also how you would "hold the countries of origin accountable". |
You can’t decrease demand among teens if your state has legalized marijuana which is a gateway drug. Our culture normalizes and glamorizes drug use, now we live with the consequences. Sad but true |
Yes to this. Maryland voters legalized marijuana in the last election. Definitely a gateway drug and definitely normalizes drug use. Again, we get what we vote for. Teens have always made poor choices. Now these poor choices can result in terrible consequences when drugs are involved. |
This is EXACTLY what out federal government is supposed to do. We can most definitely ask for cooperation from other countries. Biden and Harris have not done enough to fight that incessant flow of Fentanyl into the US. |
What EXACTLY is our federal government supposed to do? |
Again blaming other countries is not going to help. The solution will be to educate teenagers about dangers of drug use. Not normalize and glamorize drug use. If our teens can say no to drugs then the demand will go down automatically. |
Our federal government’s job is to regulate who and what comes into the US. Clearly, that is not happening right now. |
