He rejected them first. |
Could you at least name the school system? It doesn't sound like you are talking about FCPS since the OP seemed to be referencing experiences in FCPS (not named, but the AAP reference and lack of naming another school system makes it seem that way). |
You’re allowing your third grader to evaluate and select a college? Come on now- you found an online school and enrolled him. He isn’t doing the research on this… |
It’s not FCPS. |
Do you homeschool? |
No, my son goes to a charter school. Yes, I teach him in math, in addition to his regular classes. |
Is she the only 7th grader taking algebra at the school? In some LCPS schools the 8th graders taking algebra are the weaker students, and the 7th graders tend to be in their own classes. |
My friend’s son was in Algebra in 6th grade in a well known private school in the DC area. Boy did she let me know it! One day, my 7th grader was doing algebra work when this boy looked at it and asked what that was. My kid said it was algebra homework. The other kid responded that he had no idea what that was. My kid then asked what he was working on. It wasn’t algebra. It was also a self paced class. Exams were done on the student’s own time (not proctored) and heavily curved. The moral of the story is if it doesn’t look like a duck, it’s probably not one. Same applies to a true algebra class, let alone a “college level” one. You know this, which is why you’re not giving the details. |
It seems your problem is being competitive with other parents, and using your children as proxies in this bragging game. Let them be, give them the benefit of the doubt and move on, it doesn’t affect your life in any way. Nobody here claimed that remedial algebra 1 at a community college is a ‘college level’ class. It’s just one of the venues parents can find to support their kids that are more advanced and need to take that class earlier than the typical 7th-8th grade. That option is just one of the many like BYU online high school, John’s Hopkins CTY, all the online learning platforms (coursera, edx, udemy, etc), AOPS and RSM have their classes too, the list is too long to be complete. We chose the cc for this clase due to a variety of factors and we used several others over time. If telling yourself that accelerated kids are frauds gives you comfort, then do whatever helps you cope with the anxieties in your life. |
Oh give me a break with the weird vibe stuff. They are telling you to name the school not to stalk your child but because they think you are full of shit. And as for identifying your child, if they are in fact taking Algebra in 4th grade, you have already outed yourself because your child is the only one. |
You seem crazy enough to call the school and ask about 4th graders taking Algebra 1. |
New poster: every time you’re asked for any specifics - which is what the entire OP was about AND YOU were the one who offered the general info about your kid…you claim we are stalkers, giving you a weird vibe, and now are crazy. Then when told NVCC wouldn’t have allowed this, NVCC is terrible and your son rejected it even though he never applied. Translation: any time you hear what you perceive to be an attack or even a legit question…you follow up with an insult. If there really is a college class that has no hard deadlines, a class that need not be finished within a semester and exams that aren’t proctored, say the name of the college and the name of the class. |
|
Come on, you now have a multiple personality disorder, or just sock puppet posting? You are truly unique in your quest to prove… I’m not sure what, to be honest.
If you want an example of self paced Algebra 1 you can find it here: https://cty.jhu.edu/programs/online/courses/honors-algebra-i-al1 Here an example of a college level class that is self paced: https://cty.jhu.edu/programs/online/courses/ap-calculus-bc-cbc My son is qualified for the program in math, but we chose to not take their classes and went the cc route instead. Why is it so hard for you to believe that a cc might offer a similar format to the one at John Hopkins? It’s obvious that this whole discussion is about feeding your own insecurities and not about getting advice on how to support your child. |

When asked for the college name and class you instead:
- post a link for a class for grades 6-8; - post a second link for a class for grade 8+; and then - post an insult, as previously mentioned, is your MO when cornered with something you don’t like. There is no such college class. Colleges do not offer any for credit college classes that have no deadlines and no proctored exams. Please…stop with the nonsense. |
