For the average new car, only 15% pay cash and buy it outright.

This is what makes Subaru a bougie car - it draws people who can afford to skip financing or leasing.

That is actually a very interesting factoid. I wonder what % pay cash at a Mercedes dealership.

It’s astonishing how gullible people are. PP is spreading obvious disinformation. And it’s such obvious sleazy car dealership disinfo. Half…50/50! And you parrot it like a trained seal.

Moment of silence for this deliciously mixed metaphor. A+.

NPR just sounds sweeter in a Subaru, doesn't it?

We’ have two Outback’s. One is brand new and one is an older model passed down to the kid. It’s a great first car. While we love our Subaru Outbacks, I think Toyota has them beat for reliability. Subarus are decent, but we’ve gotten more miles and less time at the mechanic with the Toyotas we’ve owned. Why the Outback then? They truly perform great in the snow, are comfortable and are quite affordable- at least by today’s standards. We got a mid-grade Outback for 33k. We didn’t really like the RAV4 and CRVs as much and they were also more expensive. The next class of vehicles- Pilots and Highlanders were more than we wanted to pay.

Not in Potomac… zero Subaru drivers here…

I dunno, having bought multiple Audis and BMWs at .99-1.99% interest and then sold them to gullible used car buyers while the market surged, I think it was a pretty stupid idea to buy a car with cash lol

+1. It's a middle class striver cope. The wealthiest people I know drive nice new cars, have multiple homes in prestigious locations, and send their kids to private school. Period.

most wealthy people I know don't drive their own cars unless they are into cars. seriously, just get a driver.

Are you on India? This is America, everyone drives their own car, even Bull Gates and Warren Buffet. What a strange comment....

BTW...don't think much of Subes...have a Forester and it has eaten oil from day 1, i finally just gave up. NOT even close to the build quality and reliability of a Toyota (or even an Mazda)

My Subaru is also a crazy gas guzzler.

Mine too!!!
But my last car was a Prius.

I am sure some rich people drive Subaru, but Subaru is not known to be a "rich people" car. It's more unique a brand than the typical Honda or Toyota, so people who find the particulars of a Subaru attractive, gravitate towards it.

One thing I have no proof of is that Subaru has this practical and frugal image. If you think about it, that's one of the major ways some high-net-worth individuals accumulate their wealth.

I actually think Subaru is one of those brands that is popular with all SES groups.

My dad drove one when we were young. He was rich and frugal. It can be genuine or . . .

That can be a look people go for. It says you all know I am rich but I do not need an expensive car. Just as much an act as the person that buys the mercedes and cannot afford it.

The vast majority of Subaru, Toyota and Honda buyers are middle to low income people. A few rich folks that want to be low key buy them.

? site your source? If a major % of Subaru buyers are buying cash, then how are they "low middle income"? You think MC have $25K sitting in the bank to buy a new car? GTFO

I used to be a loan officer. The stats you'll find here seem about accurate.

Interesting. We have two Foresters and the lack of height adjustment is why I will not buy one for myself. I am 5’4” and find the seat height too high for my comfort.

The Subaru fandom is just herd mentality for a certain group of people who want to fit in with their neighbors. The cars aren't necessarily better, people who drive them just thinks so.

Have you driven an Outback in the snow? They’re unstoppable. That’s why we have two Outbacks.
